What next for Arsenal and Manchester City?

Arsenal head into the October international break on a high and face another big test in their next league clash away to Chelsea, who look to be slowly improving under Mauricio Pochettino. 

As mentioned, Pep Guardiola's side resume their Premier League campaign with a home game against Brighton, who started the season in red-hot form but have tailed off somewhat in recent games, conceding 10 goals in three matches. 

Three defeats in a row for Manchester City without Rodri

I mentioned before the game that Rodri had been shown a senseless red card against Nottingham Forest, with his team 2-0 up and cruising. Without him, they've been knocked out of the League Cup by Newcastle and suffered back-to-back losses in the Premier League. 

The good news is the Spaniard has now served his ban. Will normal service resume against Brighton after the international break?

Arsenal end poor recent record against Manchester City

I'm sure red is the favourite colour of most Arsenal fans, but this flash of green has got to look pretty good here. 

The Gunners end a run of 12 straight Premier League defeats to City, and 15 defeats in 16 games. 

"Invicible" City down into third

A little over a week ago, Manchester City had a 100% record and the fear for the rest of the Premier League was they would cruise to another title. Two defeats later and they are human again, with their flat performance in London offering hope to Spurs and Arsenal, and perhaps even other teams below them. 

Arsenal go joint top alongside Spurs

There were only two results that would have seen Spurs stay at the top of the Premier League: a draw or a 1-0 win for Arsenal.

Ange Postecoglu's team remain in first spot by virtue of having scored more goals than their North London rivals, with both sides having won six and drawn two of their first eight Premier League games. 

Can Arsenal win the Premier League?

Given Manchester City's recent dominance of the competition, maybe the question should be "Can someone else win the Premier League?"

Two league defeats in a row for Pep Guardiola's side, who now trail Spurs and the Gunners at the top. 

Full-time: Arsenal 1-0 Manchester City

And that is that! Arsenal ends a run of 12 straight Premier League defeats against Manchester City thanks to Gabriel Martinelli's deflected goal!

A long ball upfield from Ederson ends in the hands of Raya, and that should be that!

Ederson and Jesus are both booked for a bit of nonsense down by the corner flag as the former tries to get the ball back and the latter looks to waste time. 

Time is running out for City and passes like that from Gvardiol don't help. The Croat tries to play Doku in behind White but sticks the ball out for a goal kick. 

Four minutes of injury time to be played. 

Precious little reaction from Manchester City so far....

"1-0 to the Arsenal!" rings around the Ermiates. They'll take that all day, every day!

Now City are going to have to shake a leg...

Partey plays a lovely ball over the top for Tomiyasu, who flicks it onto Havertz in the box. It looks as if he'll be crowded out, but he lays the ball off to Martinelli, whose strike takes a big deflection off the unlucky Aké and wrong-foots Ederson!

Ahhhh, Jesus has to square that! The Brazilian gets into a good position in the City box and has Rice in the middle but takes one touch too many to set himself and Aké intercepts. 

The Premier League is unrivalled for late drama, however, so get ready for fireworks!

We've got to the stage where the fans at the Emirates are cheering their team winning a throw-in in the opposition half. 

That's the most we've had to shout about in the last little while...

Superb tackle from Rice!

Nunes suddenly breaks forward from midfield and looks set to continue his run into the box, only for Rice to slide in with a textbook challenge to pick his pocket. 

Odegaard curls a lovely corner into the near post and it looks as it White will get his head to it but it just goes over him and City clear.

Partey time for Arsenal

Tomiyasu, Havertz and Partey replace Zinchenko, Jorginho and Nketiah. 

I don't think I've seen one player get so visibly angry with another than Martinelli with Odegaard in this second half. The Arsenal captain shoots from range but fires well over the bar, which produces another furious reaction from the winger. 

"Nothing", is the short answer, as Raya easily collects Nunes' delivery. 

Doku breaks away down the left and wins a corner for City. What can they do here?

Martinelli has been visibly annoyed with Odegaard for losing the ball when the Brazilian has found himself in a dangerous position on a couple of occasions. 

It looks to me as if both teams would prefer not to lose rather than try to win. Come on lads, prove me wrong in the last 20. 

Rico Lewis has also gone off, with Matheus Nunes taking his place in midfield. 

Kovacic finally off for City

Kovacic doesn't complete the 90 minutes, although he's lucky to have had more than 30. Álvarez is also hooked, with Doku on and Stones making his first appearance of the season. 

A long spell of possession for City but they're going nowhere...until Foden almost sneaks the ball through to Haaland. Saliba is on top of him once again to clear the danger. 

Guardiola's side do have a corner, however, and Raya does brilliantly to get a strong punch on it under pressure. 

Gvardiol with a pass that even I could have played which completely kills the momentum of a promising attack for City, who haven't had many in this second half. 

City are struggling to keep a hold of the ball at the moment, which is not like them. 

A dangerous moment for the hosts as Jesus makes space in the box and tries to pick out a teammate just a few yards from goal but his cross hits Aké and goes behind for a corner, which is cleared. 

Role reversal in this second half, with Arsenal seeing plenty of the ball but unable to break their opponents down. 

Lewis has the ball in the net!

Manchester City are really, really hard done by there. Poor refereeing as Lewis breaks forward towards the Arsenal box and is "fouled" from behind but manages to get back up and stick the ball past Raya.

Referee Michael Oliver, however, had already blown for a foul, which it was. But had he played advantage, it was 1-0 to City. 

Arsenal still on the attack and Odegaard floats a nice pass into Nketiah, whose touch just takes him away from goal and kills the momentum of the attack, with Dias able to clear. 

Martinelli tests Ederson

Seconds later, Rice threads a nice ball through for Martinelli, whose angled strike is saved by Ederson. A first real stop for the City keeper. 

Arsenal go close!

Ederson flaps at Martinelli's corner and Jesus fizzes the ball back across goal, only for it to be cleared. It drops back to Odegaard, who blazes wildly over.

Arsenal have started the second period on the front foot after Raya's near mishap. Much better than how they started the first half. 

Madre mía...Raya almost starting where he left off, taking forever to clear under pressure from Álvarez. The Arsenal goalkeeper just got it away in the nick of time.

Gabriel Martinelli, who has missed the last five games through injury, is on for the second half for The Gunners!

City's Kovavic lucky to avoid red card

I'm really struggling to understand why Mateo Kovacic wasn't shown a second yellow card for that tackle on Declan Rice. VAR checked for a possible red card on his first challenge from behind on Martin Odegaard, which was maybe worth an orange. 

The second one, having already been booked and in the opposition half of the field, was absolute madness. Will he come out for the second half? Let's see what Pep goes. 

Half-time: Arsenal 0-0 Manchester City

A tense, tactical battle has offered little in the way of goalmouth action, with early efforts from City’s Gvardiol (cleared off the line) and Aké (blazed over from close range) by far and away the most dangerous moments.

Neither side really looked like scoring after that, although Arsenal goalkeeper Raya did his best to gift the opening goal to Álvarez, who closed down his delated clearance but saw the ball fly into the side netting.

Raya’s struggles with the ball at his feet were one of the key features of the opening 30 minutes or so, while the latter part of the half was marked by the decision not to send Kovacic off for what was clearly a second bookable offence.

City have enjoyed long spells of possession but have rarely looked like cutting Arsenal open, with Erling Haaland very much on the periphery of the game.

Shots on goal few and far between in tense first half

Here's a statistical look at the first half from our friends over at Sofascore. Those "big chances" for City came right at the start of the game, with little in the way of goalmouth action after that. 

Half-time: Arsenal 0-0 Manchester City

Probably not the first half we wee all hoping for, but a few flashpoints to discuss nevertheless!

Two minutes of injury time to be played. 

City are finishing the half on top but are still struggling to cut Arsenal open, despite their possession. 

Another Raya mistake but he gets away with it again. 

Gvardiol races down the left and crosses, with the Spaniard completing misjudging the flight of the ball. Luckily for him, Haaland does too and it goes behind off Zinchenko for a corner, which comes to nothing. 

Arsenal have been better in the last few minutes but they're almost hit on the counter-attack, a flying interception from White cutting out Álvarez's dangerous cross. 

Better from Arsenal! Odegaard lays the ball off for Zinchenko to run onto and the Ukrainian gets two bites at it, both of which are blocked.

A chance for Jorginho to shoot but he turns it down and opts to pass to Trossard, who is crowded out. 

Kovacic flirting with red card

Mateo, Mateo, Mateo. Kovacic should be off here. 

Absolutely madness from the Croat, who catches Rice late and inexplicably gets away with it. That should be a second yellow and red, no question. 

Erling Haaland comes back to life

Remember Erling Haaland? I've not mentioned him for about half-an-hour and there's a reason for that. He's just come back to life, though, taking Ederson's long ball down brilliantly and teeing up Álvarez, who blasts over from outside the box. 

Only in the Premier League are tackles celebrated like goals. Dias is running towards his own goal and Nketiah crunches into him, winning the ball fair and square. 

Love it!

Jesus is bundled over and Arsenal have a free-kick in an interesting position. Odegaard hoists the ball into the box and Ederson finally has to get his gloves dirty, catching the ball at the second attempt. 

Kovacic avoids red card

Kovacic flies into Odegaard from behind and rightly sees a yellow card. There was a VAR check for a possible red, but the original punishment stands. Perhaps a little lucky there...

Arsenal are obviously well in this game but they've not put in the most assured performance so far. Odegaard is urging the fans to get behind the players from down there on the field. 

Arsenal's first attempt!

Dias uncharacteristically gives the ball away inside his own half and Arsenal have their first sight of goal, but Nketiah's effort flies well wide of the target. 

A rare foray into the City box for the Gunners but Jesus is penalised for a foul on Gvardiol before he bears down on goal. 

Raya is at it again...

He tries to thread a pass into midfield for Rice but overhits it slightly, surrendering possession. City can't capitalise but Arsenal are asking for trouble here.

Bernardo Silva is second in the book for a lunge on Nketiah. 

Another let-off for Arsenal as Foden's simple movement towards the ball opens up space for Gvardiol, who strolls into the attacking third all alone on the left but delivers a poor pass inside. 

Ederson, by contrast, has had absolutely nothing to do, either with his hands or his feet. 

I really don't want to pick on David Raya here, but City are playing on his indecision with the ball. Watch for another quick Álvarez dart to close him down. 

HUGE LET OFF FOR RAYA!

What did I just say about David Raya?! The goalkeeper takes an age to decide who to pass to and Álvarez closes him down and gets half a block on it, the ball flying into the side netting. 

Some fans thought that was in and Raya is lucky it wasn't!

City work the ball out wide to Walker but his cross from the right goes straight into the hands of Raya. 

Plenty of possession for City once again but Arsenal have got bodies back and space is limited. 

After a brief flurry of attacks, Arsenal have dropped deep again and are inviting City to try and break them down. Other than one corner, they've been unable to do much of that so far. 

David Raya has seemingly replaced Aaron Ramsdale in the Arsenal goal due to his superior ability with the ball at his feet.We've not seen any of that so far...The Spaniard has miscued one kick and played another one straight to opposite number Ederson. 

Jorginho holds Foden back

The yellowest of yellow cards for Jorginho, who hauls Foden down as he tries to race away down the left. 

Arsenal win a corner after Jesus's direct run down the right flank and into the box. Odegaard whips a nice ball into the near post but City eventually get it clear. 

Not to be too harsh on Rob Holding, but Arsenal really suffered against Haaland last season without the injured William Saliba. The Frenchman has just come out on top in his first one-on-one battle against the City striker, who knows he's in a game. 

A little bit of time on the ball for the hosts now, which is most welcome. 

Those two chances both came from Rice's skewed pass out of play. Arsenal could do with settling down here.

From a corner, the ball finds Gvardiol at the back post and the defender's volley bounces over Raya before being cleared off the line by Rice. 

The ball then comes back in and Aké somehow blasts Haaland's flick-on over from close range!

A nervy start from Arsenal on the ball. A loose kick from Raya gifts City possession before Rice passes the ball straight out of play inside his own half when looking for Zinchenko. 

City enjoying all of the early possession, although mostly inside their own half. 

Gabriel Jesus is indeed lining up on the right-hand side of a three-man Arsenal attack, taking Saka's place.

What happened between Arsenal and Manchester City in 2022-23?

Last season, it looked for so long as if Arsenal were on course to win their first Premier League title since 2004. They were top of the table for what felt like forever, only to falter at the crucial moment, drawing three games in a row in April. That run was followed by a fatal 4-1 thumping away to City, who had also beaten them 3-1 at the Emirates and knocked them out of the FA Cup (1-0) in January. 

Pep Guardiola's side ended up winning the league by five points and very much had The Gunners' number. Has Mikel Arteta and his team learned from the experience for this season?

Erling Haaland cannot find goalscoring form for Manchester City in the Champions League

Manchester City are European champions after winning the Champions League for the first time last season. They've won two games out of two in this year's group stage, yet Haaland has hit the headlines for his "goal drought" in the competition. If we were talking about any other player, it would be utterly ridiculous, but such has been his incredible scoring rate throughout his career, his relative recent "struggles" in front of goal have caught the attention.

How many goals has Manchester City striker Erling Haaland scored this season?

Am I imagining it or has some of the hype surrounding Erling Haaland died down a touch? If that is the case, it's probably just because we've become so used to him scoring bucketloads of goals that it somehow feels less noteworthy. In any case, the Norwegian has started the new season in typically clinical fashion, scoring eight times in his first seven Premier League appearances.

The Champions League has been a slightly different story, however, and it hasn't gone unnoticed...

This is an excellent compilation from the Premier League here, it has to be said.

Maybe we shouldn't be too surprised considering Mikel Arteta played for Arsenal for five years between 2011 and 2016 before going on to work for Manchester City as Guardiola's assistant. 

Chances of him being as calm if and when The Gunners score against City today? Absolutely zero. 

How have Manchester City started the 2023-24 season?

Manchester City began the season as they finished the last and there were ominous signs they might cruise to another league title. That could, of course, still happen, but their surprise defeat to Wolves last weekend at least showed they were beatable after six straight wins at the start of the campaign. 

They have been moved off the top of the table as a result of that loss, but Pep Guardiola's men will go a point clear of Spurs with a victory at the Emirates. 

I would suggest the whole of the Premier League is hoping for a home win in this one...

How have Arsenal started the 2023-24 season?

Arsenal are one of just two unbeaten teams in the Premier League, alongisde North London rivals Spurs, who currently stop of the table after their narrow victory at Luton on Saturday. Mikel Arteta's side have won five of their opening seven league games, although all four of their dropped points have come at home (against Fulham and Spurs). 

A win against City will see them move level with Ange Postecoglu's team on 20 points, while a two-goal victory will propel them into first spoton goal difference.

Youngster Rico Lewis has again been given the nod by Guardiola as Rodri's stand-in. No surprises elsewhere, other than the presence of John Stones on the bench. Phil Foden is preferred over Jack Grealish and Jérémy Doku on the left.

Arsenal team to play Manchester City: Bukayo Saka misses out

BIG news! Bukaya Saka neither starts nor makes the bench. My eyes were not deceiving me after all.

Eddie Nketiah leads the line, with Gabriel Jesus presumably moving out to Saka's normal position on the right. Thomas Partey is on the bench, as is Gabriel Martinelli, just to make me look stupid. 

Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Rice, Jorginho; Jesus, Nketiah, Trossard. 

Manchester City and Pep hit London Town

A pensive Pep Guardiola marches into the Emirates. What's he thinking about? Maybe he's still furious with that Rodri red card ahead of one of the toughest Premier League games of the season, at least on paper. 

Relax, Pep, 12 wins in a row, and 15 wins in 16 games against The Gunners. It'll all be OK.

Arsenal have arrived at the Emirates and once this clip started playing, I was waiting patiently for a glimpse of Bukayo Saka, just to make sure he wasn't hobbling into the building.

Big cheers for the winger as he walked through the door but was he moving a bit gingerly?! Or are my eyes playing tricks on me? In any case, his mere presence surely means there's a chance he could play some part in the game. 

15 defeats in 16 games for Arsenal vs Manchester City

This is quite an incredibe statistic, I'm sure you'll agree. 

Arsenal have lost 15 of their last 16 games against Manchester City, including 12 in a row in the Premier League. TWELVE!

Don't worry though Gunners fans, that's got to change sometime and you're due one. 

Early Manchester City team news: Rodri suspended

It's not often you see pictures of Manchester City players looking despondent but here's a second one in a row.

And Rodri has every reason to after he was needlessly sent off in his team's home win over Nottingham Forest. The Premier League champions were 2-0 up and cruising to victory when the Spaniard ridiculously decided to throttle Morgan Gibbs-White round the throat seconds after half time. An early adios and a three-match suspension, which he completes against Arsenal. 

Daft doesn't quite cover it. 

Early Manchester City team news: De Bruyne and Stones absent

So, Arsenal could be without one of their key men in the form of Saka, but City know they'll be without one of theirs. Kevin De Bruyne suffered a hamstring injury in the first Premier League game of the season and we've not seen him since. 

“I see [De Bruyne] every day and he’s getting better, and his mood is good. Hopefully [he will be back] sooner than expected,” City head coach Pep Guardiola said in his pre-match press conference on Friday. Not today, though, I'm afraid. 

Defender-cum-midfielder John Stones hasn't played at all this season because of a hip problem and is still out too. 

Early Arsenal team news: Thomas Partey returns to the squad

It's not all bad news for Mikel Arteta, though. Midfield anchor man Thomas Partey returned to training sooner than expected and is ready to play some part in today's game, although the Spaniard has been coy over whether the former Atlético Madrid man will start. 

Will it be Partey time or will Arteta be a Partey pooper (expect more of this as the game goes on)?

Early Arsenal team news: Martinelli and Timber out through injury

Gabriel Martinelli was very much Robin to Saka's Batman last season but is expected to sit out a sixth successive match because of a hamstring problem.

Summer signing Jürrien Timber suffered an ACL tear on his Arsenal debut and is set for a significant spell on the sidelines. 

Bukayo Saka: Arsenal's talisman

Just to highlight how important the England winger has been to his team, no player in Europe's top five leagues has played more games than Saka since the start of the 2021-22 season. He hasn't missed a league fixture since before then. 

In that time, he has made 83 Premier League appearances and scored 29 goals (101 matches, 32 goals in all competitions).

Has any player been more important to Arsenal under Mikel Arteta than Bukayo Saka?

The winger had been an injury doubt for last weekend's win over Bournemouth but started and scored, which appeared to suggest he was back at full fitness. However, he was forced to come off in the midweek Champions League defeat to Lens because of a muscle injury, which means he may not be available for today's game.

It's very much be a case of wait and see.

How's this for a way to round off the Premier League weekend?!

Last season's top two, Arsenal and Manchester City, face off at the Emirates, with "pupil" Mikel Arteta once again looking to get one over on "master" Pep Guardiola. 

The two teams head into Sunday's game in London knowing a win will move them to the top of the Premier League table, which means this promises to be an absolute cracker!
