Defence is the best form of attack, it seems

That's quite the stat - I suppose it helps to have a giant in the defence and a religious figure behind it.

FULL TIME!

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Arsenal pressed and huffed and puffed but the brick house that Eddie Howe had built in front of goal was too much for Martin 'Goldilocks' Ødegaard and co to break through. Bear with me on that metaphor.

Newcastle end up with their second successive 0-0 to start the year and that makes 8 draws for them - you have to go all the way down the league to Brentford to find another team with as many.

But, I think Arsenal will be the most frustrated as they had plenty of chances to break the deadlock and pull even further away from Manchester City. Somewhere, Erling Haaland's supercomputer mind and legs are working out that it's only another 50 goals to win the league...

as.com

And Saka smacks the volley over the bar!

90+7

Pope punches out! Corner!

Throw for Arsenal.

This is the last chance of the game.

The ball did hit Murphy on the hand....

Into the last minute...

as.com

Partey, on halfway, thwacks a pass through the lines and it pings off a Newcastle player, almost ending up at the feet of Nketiah in the box.

Close.

as.com
90+2

Corner for Newcastle. Burn beats Saka (yes, really) to win it for Newcastle.

Well defended by Saliba.

as.com

TOMIYASU SAVES ARSENAL!

Wood was played through on his own and was one-on-one with Ramsdale. For some reason, he doesn't decide to shoot, instead playing it across goal and the right-back cuts out the pass!

What an opportunity!

as.com
90

FIVE minutes added.

as.com
90

Saka tries to skin Dan Burn for the 200th time but his touch goes too far and Newcastle have a goal kick.

as.com
90

We're into the last minute of normal time - will we see a goal?

as.com
89

Ramsdale runs 40 yards out of his box to stop a long ball finding Saint Maximin!

The game is broken!

as.com
87

HUGE SAVE FROM POPE!!!

EDDIE NKETIAH HAD THE BEST CHANCE OF THE GAME!

He was slipped in behind the defence and Pope got down amazingly well to stop the shot!

as.com
87

SaintMaximin ON

Willock OFF

as.com
86

Longstaff, Willock and quite possibly Schar all can't continue.

as.com
84

CHANCE!

Martinelli passes to Ødegaard on the edge of the box but his shot spins away and almost finds Nketiah on the penalty spot! Newcastle clear!

as.com
84

Willock is alone, doing the downward dog on the pitch. He can't continue.

as.com
82

Ramsdale calmly allows a header across goal from Burn to go out, causing every fan in the stadium to let out a noise previously unheard to human ears. That was the sound of 60,000 hearts falling out of their trouser legs.

as.com
81

Trippier puts in a dangerous cross that's just too high for Chris Wood to get a head onto it. Kiwis can't fly, of course.

as.com
80

Ten minutes to go...

as.com
79

SO CLOSE FROM MARTINELLI!!!

THE FRONT POST HEADER SKIMS THE POST!

as.com
79

Corner to Arsenal after some good pressure. They're firing crosses in from all sides now.

as.com
78

FABIAN SCHAR SAVES NEWCASTLE!

Martinelli was about to play the ball across to Nketiah but the centre back got a foot to the ball!

as.com
76

Head tennis now from the two sides, which makes Arteta furious.

Martinelli gets bored, takes the ball down and smacks a cross low towards goal. Pope saves.

as.com
75

Tomiyasu ON

White OFF

as.com
73

Willock makes it all the way into the box with the ball but by the time he gets there, he's absolutely knackered and pretty much just gives the ball back to Arsenal. Chance gone.

Tomiyasu coming on for the home side.

as.com
72

Newcastle's giants clear well and the immediate danger is averted.

as.com
72

CHANCE!

Saka gets the ball and he switches to Martinelli, but his shot is blocked. Corner.

as.com
70

The game has slowed down over the past 5 minutes due to the changes and a series of fouls in the middle of the pitch.

Dan Burn is happy about that.

as.com
67

Almirón and (an unhappy) Wilson OFF

Murphy and Wood ON

as.com
66

Saka is going to make Dan Burn's eyes fall out of his head at this rate.

The winger is giving him a torrid time, everything is coming down the right for Arsenal and it is not a race the defender wants to have.

as.com
64

Saka is definitely not injured, but Dan Burn might have just got so twisted he won't fit into his tiny car later tonight. The winger ran, stopped still, ran and swirved his way around the defender before winning a corner.

as.com
63

Martinelli fires a curving shot towards goal from the left, but Pope saves with ease.

as.com
63

Saka is back up and hopping around like a happy rabbit. Back to normal. Off we go again.

as.com
62

Saka has been down for a while - he looks to have been hit in the head.

as.com
60

Half an hour to go, Arsenal continue to probe and Newcastle continue to make it difficult

The home side sweep side to side before looking in between the lines. Nothing. Nada.

as.com
59

Nick Pope saves the cross from the free-kick. Danger averted.

as.com
59

Almirón booked for creeping over the white spray and edging too close to the ball. What a great bit of mischief.

as.com
57

The referee blows for a foul on Saka by Joelinton... right on the edge of the box on the right wing.

Saka had made a fantastic run down the right.

as.com
56

Ødegaard wastes a beautiful chance to score, hitting his shot high and wide from the edge of the box (and he had Saka open on the right wing).

as.com
54

SHOTS

Arsenal 7-8 Newcastle

SHOTS ON TARGET

Arsenal 1-1 Newcastle

as.com
52

Joelinton gets back to smash into Ødegaard and stop the attack, great defending.

Saint-Maximin is warming up...

as.com
51

Now it looks like Newcastle have evened things up... time for them to attack and push Arsenal back.

as.com
50

ENORMOUS CHANCE FOR NEWCASTLE!

MISTAKE FROM RAMSDALE IN THE BUILD UP!

The goalkeeper was robbed in the box and the scramble ended with Wilson almost getting on the end of a cross to tap in!

as.com
49

Free-kick to be taken by Trippier on halfway...

Schar heads over.

as.com
48

Wilson wins a foul. Newcastle breathe.

as.com
47

Arsenal again with some fabulous play from front to back; the ball was played through the lines and out to Saka whose cross was hacked away furiously by the Newcastle defence, who are already on high alert.

as.com
47

Newcastle clear after a fantastic start from Arsenal: Nketiah got in behind and almost caused a lot of danger with a low cross from the left.

as.com
46

We are back underway!

as.com

The players are back out for the second half!

as.com

It's been a feisty affair so far...

Perhaps it's a good thing that the half ended when it did, as the heat levels were definitely rising!

as.com
Miguel Almirón is Newcastle’s star man in the 22-23 season

Miguel Almirón made more tackles (5) than any other player in the first half.

Here's how important he is for this Newcastle side.

as.com

HALF TIME!

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Arsenal deserve to be winning, but Newcastle are 100% still in this game. That late chance has reminded everyone in the Emirates Stadium that there are two teams on the pitch, despite the early chances for The Gunners.

Saka has caused problems all night long and Ødegaard looks like the best player ever to grace a pitch, Eddie Howe will be grateful most of the chances ended up in the side netting.

Let's see if Newcastle can hold on or even grab a goal themselves, or if it is the home side who will capitalise on their dominance.

as.com
45+2

JUST OVER THE BAR!!!

JOELINTON!!

as.com
45+1

A quick free-kick is played into the Arsenal box by Trippier but Arsenal defend well.

The ball comes out to Longstaff and his shot is deflected out for a corner.

as.com
45

2 minutes to be added on.

as.com
45

Into the last minute of the half, and things have just been turned up a level in terms of anger on the pitch.

as.com
43

Willock tries to shoot but instead fools everyone (even himself) by flicking the ball behind him.

Arsenal counter... the crowd is electric!

as.com
42

Xhaka next into the book for being naughty.

as.com

VAR says no.

As you were...

as.com
41

The referee is trying to calm things down.

Newcastle certainly think they deserve a penalty.

as.com
41

Dan Burn says some very naughty words to the referee after he is brought down in the box...

as.com
39

Arsenal have Newcastle pegged right back here: any further and they'll have to pay for a seat in the stands.

as.com
38

Ødegaard lets a pass ross under his boot on the edge of the box for Partey to unleash a strike... but it's blocked.

as.com
37

Newcastle have an 'attack' that ends in nothing...

as.com
36

Nketiah just sent all of Schar's bones flying out of his body and onto the floor as he spun past him like Sonic the Hedgehog. Whoosh.

as.com
35

GABRIEL!! SO CLOSE WITH THE HEADER!

It went just wide to the far post!

as.com
34

Ah, the referee gave a foul. Looked suspect to me, that one.

Free kick to Arsenal, going to be launched into the box...

as.com
34

Newcastle instantly scrambled back after losing the ball and robbed Ødegaard in seconds. That was impressive.

as.com
33

Nketiah needlessly fouls Schar and is booked. The striker looks frustrated.

as.com
30

Arsenal with a couple of minutes of controlled possession, probing to see if they can draw Newcastle out of their Roman turtle formation they've backed into.

as.com
29

Joelinton uses his body well to make a long run forward with the ball and drag Newcastle out of their defensive shape.

as.com
28

Ouch! Wilson jumps into a challenge and catches Saliba on the foot.

The defender looks good to carry on, fortunately.

as.com
27

Bruno Guimarães booked for a foul on Nketiah.

as.com
26

Newcastle get a breather after Wilson buys a much-needed foul on halfway.

Arteta, who was right next to the foul, is not a happy bunny rabbit.

as.com
25

A one-two between Saka and Ødegaard almost ends badly for Newcastle but the Norwegian's ball is just too heavy...

as.com
24

Joelinton is OK, by the way.

as.com
22

Nketiah is almost put through after Zinchenko's brilliant pass but it's well cut out by Bruno.

as.com
21

Joelinton is down after a foul from Benjamin White.

AS USA’s best football moments of the year

There's a photo of Dan Burn in his tiny car here:

as.com
19

Arsenal switch the play to Saka, who tries to get back the man mountain Dan Burn (who drives an incredibly small car).

as.com
17

Poor Ben White ran all the wayon his own before realising none of his friends had followed him, just Longstaff. The Newcastle midfielder cleared the danger.

as.com
17

Schar heads over a Newcastle corner.

Arsenal counter with... Ben White?

as.com
15

CHANCE! ØDEGAARD!

He does excellently well down the right, skipping over challenges, before slamming a shot into the side netting.

as.com
14

CHANCE!

It all came from a cleared cross: Nketiah ran all the way down the pitch and cut back to Xhaka, who decides to pass it square - something that literally nobody on earth saw coming - and everybody in an Arsenal shirt misses the pass.

as.com
12

Trippier tries a chipped pass over the left back towards the oncoming Almirón, but Arsenal  - who will have studied it plenty of times with Arteta - clean up nicely.

as.com
12

Newcastle are now trying to force some pressure onto Arsenal; Wilson has a weak shot saved by Ramsdale.

as.com
10

Ødegaard is causing havoc in the middle; Newcastle can't grab hold of him, he's squirming everywhere, dipping and ducking under challenges like a cheating limbo player.

as.com
8

85% possession for Arsenal so far, who have already had 5 shots.

as.com
7

AND ANOTHER, ANOTHER CHANCE!

Martinelli slipped Xhaka through and the midfielder hit a low shot into the side netting!

Newcastle are on the ropes!

as.com
5

AND ANOTHER CHANCE!

The ball went out to the left after the save and was immediately hit by Martinelli. whose shot was blocked. Saka got on the loose ball and went down in the box, but the referee waved it away...

as.com
5

HUGE CHANCE FOR ARSENAL!!

Saka burns past two defenders before hitting a shot towards Pope! SAVED!

as.com
3

CHANCE!

Partey plays a great ball through the lines to Martinelli and the cross bounces first to White and then Ødegaard who flaps a volley over the bar from inside the box!

as.com
2

Free kick for Newcastle on the right. Trippier to cross in...

Cleared.

as.com
1

Newcastle are straight out of the blocks and press Arsenal high up the pitch...

as.com
1

The players take the knee...and we're off!

Newcastle kick us off from right to left.

Team news! Newcastle first:

It's a strong lineup from Howe, as Callum Wilson comes in for Chris Wood, who starts alongside Almirón and Joelinton.

as.com

A spooky stat...

Arsenal lost their opening fixture of 2022, against Manchester City.

They haven't lost two consecutive New Year's fixtures since 1995/6. And who beat them in the latter of those games?

Newcastle...

as.com

Don't think the 0-0 meant a bad performance

If it wasn't for the Leeds goalkeeper, Newcastle would have run away with the game. They took Leeds apart and were unlucky not to get another win on their tally for the season.

Who's the ref?

Of course, it's Andrew Madley!

He has officiated 11 Premier League games so far this season and since the World Cup he has given out cards like it's Christmas.

His assistants are Lee Betts and Ian Hussin; the fourth official is Jarred Gillett and Mr VAR today is Stuart Atwell.

And to break all curses and bad records, it probably helps to have a mix between a space alien and a radiation-emitting galaxy on your team. Lucky Newcastle, then.

Newcastle: team news and recap

The Magpies are also on the verge of a bit of history, as they could break a club record by going 16 games unbeaten if they avoid defeat tonight.

Alexander Isak has finally returned to training but may not have the match fitness to play while Shelvey, Targett and Krafth are also unavailable due to fitness issues.

Eddie Howe will be looking to break his own personal London curse as well: he has lost all 6 away games to Arsenal that he has been on the sidelines.

Their last game was one only it's mother could love, a 0-0 draw against Leeds United in the pouring rain at St James' Park. The less said about that the better, so I'll leave it at Newcastle should have definitely won and say no more.

as.com

Arsenal: team news and recap

This could be the 8th straight home win for The Gunners if they get 3 points tonight, but they will have to do it without Gabriel Jesus, who is still recovering from the injury he suffered at the World Cup with Brazil.

Reiss Nelson is also out.

Last time out, Arsenal swept Brighton aside, comfortably beating them 4-2, and no team in Premier League history has lost the title after collecting 16 points from 43 games, so the pressure of history is on Arteta's men to keep their good run going.
