As Real Madrid wave goodbye to ‘septuple’ dreams, what trophies are still at stake for Ancelotti’s side?

A 5-2 defeat for ‘Los Blancos’ at the hands of Barcelona in the Super Cup final has laid any dreams of a historic seven titles this season to rest.

It was always an ambitious ‘ask’ from the outside as, for the first time ever due to the introduction of the 2025 expanded FIFA Club World Cup, major European clubs could aspire to win seven major titles in the current soccer season.

Only two clubs ever managed to claim every available title in any given season with Guardiola’s FC Barcelona first achieving the feat back in 2009 winning LaLiga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup along with the Champions League, European Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before Bundesliga giants FC Bayern Munich repeated the sweep in 2020.

Two titles in the bag

The club’s road to seventh title heaven started in Poland last August as they brushed Serie A’s Atalanta aside in the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw. New signing Kylian Mbappé made his debut and bagging the second goal as part of a 2-0 win the over Bergamo based outfit.

Title number two fell in Doha last December as Liga MX outfit CF Pachuca were outclassed by the Santiago Bernabeu side as part of a 3-0 win with coach Ancelotti bagging his 15th title on the Madrid bench in the process.

Madrid fall short in Jeddah

Despite sweeping Real Mallorca aside in the semi-final to set up a final clash against arch rivals Barcelona, it was Hansi Flick’s side who turned on the style at the King Abdullah Sports Stadium on Sunday as they outclassed Madrid as part of a 5-2 win. Indeed, the scoreline could have been more comprehensive but Polish keeper Wojciech Szczęsny’s red card saw the Catalan side reduced to ten men for the bulk of the second half.

What titles are still on offer for Madrid?

Despite being down, Real Madrid are far from out with four pieces of silverware still at stake in the remainder of the season ahead.

‘Los Blancos’ return to competitive action this Thursday as they face Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 tie. The final of the 2025 final will be, once again staged in Seville in April.

The LaLiga title race does look like being a three-horse-race between Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid with Diego Simeone’s side arguably boasting the strongest squad in LaLiga and currently sitting on the summit of the table at the halfway stage of the season.

The Champions League group stage resumes next week and Madrid are unlikely to secure a top eight finish with games outstanding against RB Salzburg and Brest.

Defeats to Lille, Milan and Liverpool have shown a fragility to the team in Europe this season, but despite these setbacks, it would take a brave man not to bet against ‘Los Blancos’ heading onto the pitch in the Munich final next May.

The final silverware on offer in the 2024-25 season will be disputed in the USA as the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off with 32 teams.

The group stage draw was conducted last December and Real Madrid were handed a reasonably benevolent draw being pitted in a group with RB Salzburg (Austria), CF Pachuca (Mexico) and Saudi outfit Al Hilal.
