All in all, it is not a good time to be welcoming Manchester City to Villa Park. Pep Guardiola’s side have been doing what they generally do and other than a thrilling 3-3 draw against Newcastle have won the rest of their games this season. City are second, two points adrift of Arsenal, two ahead of Spurs and firm favourites for the title again this season. Snapping up Erling Haaland for €60 million was a fine piece of business and the Norwegian has hit the ground running, scoring nine goals in his first five Premier League games and two consecutive hat-tricks. Villa’s defence, who have shipped nine goals already, will not be relishing the task ahead.
City’s record against Villa is their best against any side of the Premier League era, the Citizens having won 28 of their fixtures against Saturday’s opponents, who have only managed a single draw in the last 11 meetings between the sides. Adding to the pressure on Gerrard is the weight of history: defeat on Saturday would represent the first time since 1986-87 that Villa have lost five of their first six games. The Villans were relegated that season.
