Atlanta United confirm the signing of former Chivas keeper Raúl Gudiño
The Major League Soccer franchise confirmed the signing of the Mexico international on a free transfer after playing four seasons with Liga MX side Chivas de Guadalajara.
Raúl Gudiño spent the last four tournaments playing for Chivas de Guadalajara and made a total of 79 appearances. The Liga MX side decided not to extend the 26-year-old’s contract and Atlanta United decided to sign him on a free transfer.
Gudiño will fight for a starting job
“Raúl was a free agent and was well-sought after and we’re pleased to be able to secure his services for Atlanta United,” Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said. “He’s a goalkeeper with experience in big environments and we’re looking forward to integrating him into the group.”
Atlanta United lost Brad Guzan for the remainder of the season after rupturing his achilles tendon and they are in search of his replacement for the remainder of the 2022 MLS campaign. Gudiño will challenge Bobby Shuttleworth and Rocco Rios Novo for the starting job.
Since Guzan’s injury, Shuttleworth became the starting goalkeeper but he has not convinced the head coach Gonzalo Pineda. So Atlanta’s manager decided to give Rios Novo an opportunity in the 2-0 win over Interr Miami over the weekend and he earned a clean sheet in his MLS debut. So Gudiño will have his opportunity next month once his visa arrives and is eligible to officially join the team.
