Atlético draw a line: Julián Álvarez isn’t going anywhere

The transfer saga surrounding Julián Álvarez has finally hit a wall. Atlético de Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín made it unmistakably clear in a club‑released interview that the Argentine striker is not leaving — not for Barcelona, not for anyone.

“Our position is infinite,” Gil Marín said. “We’re not accepting $110 million, $165 million, or even $220 million for Julián Álvarez.”

He emphasized that both he and the club have told Álvarez, his agent, and Barcelona president Joan Laporta that Atlético is “the best place in the world” for the forward and that he’s “the perfect striker” for Diego Simeone’s project.

A spark that ignited the drama

The first sign Álvarez might be open to leaving came after Atlético’s Champions League match against Tottenham. When asked about his future, he gave a vague answer that set off alarms: “Who knows? Maybe yes, maybe no. I’m happy here… I never said anything bad about the club.”

From there, the rumor mill exploded — and Barcelona emerged as the source of the uncertainty.

Álvarez didn’t calm things down at the World Cup either. After Argentina’s blowout win over Austria, he said: “The best thing is a transfer. I want to fulfill my dream.”

That comment poured gasoline on an already raging fire.

Barça vs. Atlético: public statements, social‑media jabs, and rising tension

Laporta, newly sworn in again as Barça president, confirmed they made a “significant” offer for Álvarez — but said it wouldn’t stay on the table forever. Speaking from New York, he told El Larguero: “The player wants a change of scenery. We’re ready to welcome him with a very good offer. But it won’t be unlimited.”

Atlético’s response? A firm, unwavering no.

Gil Marín said Álvarez has a valid contract and remains central to Simeone’s new project. He also took a swipe at Laporta: “Joan acts for the fans, the media… for his own circus. I’m not offended. But he knows perfectly well Julián won’t play for Barcelona next season.”

He added that Laporta keeps the story alive because he enjoys the attention — even though the transfer is impossible.

Can Álvarez repair his relationship with Atlético fans?

Gil Marín believes so. He insists Álvarez has been “poorly advised” since the season ended but remains a top‑tier professional and a good person. He expects the striker’s performance and attitude to return to normal.

“Fans and player have it easy. It all depends on his behavior and performance. My dream — and every fan’s dream — is seeing Julián score goals and win titles for Atlético. I think it will happen.”

Gil Marín also celebrated Atlético’s historic presence at the World Cup:

He also praised Johnny Cardoso, who skipped the World Cup to undergo surgery and join preseason from day one.

Gil Marín said Atlético has separated itself from the rest of La Liga’s pack and now sits closer to Madrid and Barça than to anyone else.

He admitted that Champions League commitments sometimes reduce focus in league play, but insisted Atlético must “think big.”
