Atlético Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid: as it happened

Thanks for joining

That's all from me tonight. Thanks for reading and see you soon!

FT: Atlético Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Atlético have recorded an important win over Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Simeone's side have extended their lead in fourth place to six points over Real Betis in fifth place.

Both sides had really good chances in the second half, but Los Colchoneros managed to hold on.

Atlético also had several chances of their own to finish Real Madrid off, through both Carrasco and substitute Griezmann.

Ancelotti's subs created some late opportunities but the league champions were unable to equalise.

The winning goal came from a first half Yannick Carrasco penalty after Vallejo took Cunha down in the box.

With just three league games to go, Atlético are closer to reaching their Champions League objective and securing fourth spot.

Atlético beat cross-city rivals

Yannick Carrasco's first half penalty is enough to give Atlético Madrid the three points in the Madrid derby.

FT: Atlético Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Atlético beat the league champions in the Madrid derby.

And the referee blows his whistle!

95

Savic makes a crucial tackle as Vinicius thinks he's about to enter the box.

94

We're into the last 90 seconds...

93

OFF Carrasco

ON Renan Lodi

Carrasco has been superb tonight.

93

Vinicius tries to pick out Modric in the box but hits it out of play.

Both sides have had really good chances in the second half. Real Madrid's subs have created the most recent chances but they have yet to equalise...

90+

We have five additional minutes. Atlético are just holding on now.

89

Another glorious chance for the away team. Vinicius crosses from the left wing. Nacho is all alone in the box but somehow manages to head it onto his shoulder and it goes over.

88

OBLAK saves!

It's a fine save. Asensio's free is low and hard but Oblak somehow sees it and gets down to his left to stop it going in.

85

It's that man again. Vinicius curls one from just outside the box, on the left. It's straight at Oblak.

84

Vinicius crosses but he's probably surprised to find out that Benzema isn't in the box. Felipe clears it. 1-0

Atlético lead but it could be more

Carrasco hits the post. It remains 1-0 to the home side.

77

Carrasco cracks the inside of the post!

76

It just won't go in for Griezmann. Carrasco, in typical Carrasco fashion, dances past three players, before picking out Griezmann. He's 10 yards out, takes a touch, spins and shoots wide.

Griezmann's last goal for Atleti came in the Copa del Rey in January.

74

Cunha goes for the halfway line lob. He spots Lunin off his line but his shot goes over the bar. That would have been embarrassing for Lunin. The Ukrainian keeper is making his first league start of the season tonight.

73

Griezmann!

His left-footed effort goes just wide. It looked like it was creeping into the far top corner. The Frenchman has been impressive since coming on.

73

Reinildo goes off injured

Atlético have been forced into making a change. Reinildo goes down injured and is replaced by Felipe.

71

The Real Madrid subs have given them some much-needed energy.

70

It's Valverde again!

And it's another super strike from distance but Oblak manages to push it away.

Real Madrid subs

OFF Militao & Kroos

ON Mendy & Modric

68

Fede Valverde drives wide after cutting in from the right. Oblak had it covered.

66

Vinicius goes on a mazy run and lays it off for Asensio, who sees his shot blocked. Vinicius is only on the pitch and is already causing havoc.

Madrid changes

OFF Casemiro & Jovic

ON Federico Valverde & Vinicius

63

Lunin makes a big save from Cunha's low strike. Atlético go closer to doubling their lead.

60

Carrasco buries his shot over the bar. He could have had his brace but it goes sailing over. He almost strikes it too well after good play from Marcos Llorente.

59

Casemiro shoots but it's easy for Oblak. The Brazilian fails to make the most of a glorious chance in the box.

57

Griezmann shoots over from 30 yards out after linking up with Carrasco.

56

Jovic heads Kroos' corner into the hands of Oblak. Real Madrid have struggled to create anything of note, however, they have Benzema, Modric and Vinicius to call upon if they decide to.

56

Kondogbia has been excellent in midfield for Atlético, pressing high, winning the ball back and starting moves.

54

Asensio crosses to the back post. Giménez heads it away and it remains 1-0 to Atlético.

52

Carrasco crosses to the back post. Cunha goes to volley it but accidentally catches Vallejo in the head. He apologies to the defender.

51

Real Madrid have started the better of the teams in the second half.

50

Asensio plays a through-ball to Jovic. Savic defends well to prevent the shot hitting the target.

There are 63,874 spectators at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid tonight for the Madrid derby.

46

Griezmann, sporting a new haircut, is on for Correa.

46

The home side kick us off for the second half.

Atlético change

OFF Correa

ON Griezmann

The players are making their way out for the second half.

Carrasco goal has Atlético ahead

Simeone's side are 1-0 up and it could be more but their final pass has let them down on several occasions.

HT: Atlético Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Yannick Carrasco's penalty on 40 minutes has the home side ahead in the Madrid derby.

47

OBLAK saves!

The ball falls to Jovic inside the box. He's all alone but Oblak makes a big save to keep his side ahead.

47

Carrasco is caught offside for Atlético.

45+

There will be two minutes added on.

45

Kroos sends an effort just wide from 25 yards. It's an excellent strike from the German midfielder but it just curls wide of Oblak's right hand post.

44

Atlético deserve to be ahead. Carrasco passes to Correa in the box. The Argentine spins on the ball but his shot is eventually blocked.

The Wanda Metropolitano is making some noise now!

Atlético take the lead

It's Carrasco's sixth league goal of the season.

Carrasco puts Lunin the wrong way and the home side are leading in the derby.

Atlético take the lead!

40

Yannick Carrasco scores from the penalty spot!

And it's a yellow card for Vallejo for catching Cunha inside the box.

PENALTY for Atlético Madrid!

36

And after 36 minutes, Real Madrid have their first shot on goal through Rodrygo. But before that Cunha is wedged between two Real defenders and the Wanda erupts.

The referee is going to check VAR!

36

Real Madrid have been very average tonight. They're league champions with one eye on the Champions League final.

35

Militao heads away Koke's corner from the right.

Diego Simeone continues to bounce around his touchline in his ever-present black suit. It looks like he's playing left-back at times.

31

It's all Atlético now. Vrsaljko sends his cross into Lunin's hands.

30

Cunha is through on goal. Nacho makes a last-ditch block as the Brazilian places it into the far bottom corner. Marcos Llorente creates the chance with a beautiful backheel.

27

Lucas Vázquez goes into the book for a challenge on Carrasco, who continues to cause problems for Real Madrid on the left wing. Atlético have been the better team but it remains scoreless in the Spanish capital.

27

Atlético have had some joy down the left, but their final ball has been overhit on most occasions. This time, Koke sends it in but it evades everyone.

26

Giménez goes for the long cross-field ball but it goes out of play and Real Madrid have possession again.

Frustrating start for Jovic

The Serbian striker has had very little service so far. There's a good possibility he will leave the club this summer.

24

Carrasco's inswinger just misses Correa's head in the box.

23

Real Madrid aren't applying any pressure on Atlético coming out from the back. The home side just have to make better use of their time on the ball.

Real Madrid team

Ancelotti has sent out a weaker team tonight. After 22 minutes, it remains goalless.

20

It's a deserved yellow card for Jovic, who clips Correa on the Achilles. I felt that one.

Camavinga, who was excellent against Man City in the Champions League, has completed all 13 of his attempted passes so far.

17

Atlético take the corner from the left. Carrasco's cross goes over everyone and out for a goal kick. Definitely not the Belgian's best ever ball.

Benzema, Modrić, Vinicius, Courtois, Mendy, Carvajal and Valverde are all on the Madrid bench.

12

Lucas Vázquez pulls down Carrasco on the edge of the box but the referee waves play on. The Wanda Metropolitano is furious with that decision.

Real Madrid are on an 11-game unbeaten streak against Atlético in LaLiga, their best such derby run against Simeone as coach.

10

Atlético have threatened early on. Carrasco has been the most dangerous threat on the left. He has the wonderful ability of dropping his shoulder and beating the full-back.

8

Carrasco goes close!

This time he takes it past Casemiro but drives a low effort wide of Lunin's right hand post.

LaLiga champions Real Madrid secured the title with four games to spare courtesy of a 4-0 win over Espanyol last weekend.

7

Militao defends well and blocks Carrasco's attempted shot inside the box. Real Madrid clear the resulting corner.

6

Kroos sends the free-kick straight into the hands of Oblak.

5

Savic leaves a leg out and clips Nacho, who goes down.

4

Correa drives wide from 10 yards out. Big chance for Atlético.

Los Blancos are league champions and have nothing to play for. Atlético need the points and are at home so they will have to take the game to their neighbours.

Luka Jovic was drafted into the Real Madrid starting XI before the game as Mariano had to pull out due to a muscle injury.

1

Kondogbia blasts over from distance in the first chance of the game.

Atlético are playing in their home strip from right to left as we watch it. Real Madrid are playing in white shirts, shorts and socks.

Real Madrid get us underway!

Simeone has a big hug for Ancelotti just before we get underway here.

What an atmosphere there is in the Wanda Metropolitano tonight!

Koke and Nacho will lead the teams out tonight.

Both teams are waiting in the tunnel ahead of the Madrid derby.

Benzema, one goal away from equalling Raúl’s Real Madrid record

Karim Benzema is one step away from equaling a record held by a Real Madrid icon as the Frenchman is just one goal away from catching Raúl in the ranking of top scorers in Real Madrid’s history.

The former Lyon striker has found the net 323 times in the famous white shirt in his more than 15 years as a player with the side from the Spanish capital. Benzema has has five games remaining this season to surpass Raúl and would sit behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the overall ranking. The Portuguese striker bagged 450 goals in 438 games for Real Madrid with that record practically unattainable.

No guard of honour for league champions

Atlético have already caused a stir prior to kick-off at Wanda Metropolitano by confirming they will not offer Madrid a guard of honour, with their strong response claiming the performative gesture was not required.

Instead, Atlético congratulated their neighbours in a statement and Diego Simeone followed suit by commending the work of Carlo Ancelotti as he questioned the need for the media frenzy surrounding the guard of honour.

“Always in this search for questions they try to generate controversy, what he said, what he feels,” he added.

“The reality is what the club said in a statement, explained perfectly, to congratulate Real Madrid above all, to the footballers and to their coaching staff because they have done a great job.

“I have great respect for Madrid, who have just become champions, but we have more respect for our people who are with us all day.”

Diego Simeone insists Atlético Madrid have “four finals” left to secure Champions League football as they prepare for the derby with Real Madrid on Sunday.

Atlético followed up a goalless draw with Granada by losing 2-0 to Athletic Club last Saturday, allowing fifth-placed Real Betis to move just three points behind Simeone’s side.

Ancelotti: “Bale wasn’t being antisocial, he couldn’t move”

In his pre-match press conference, Carlo Ancelotti spoke about Gareth Bale's absence from the league title celebrations.

“We are all very fond of Bale. He wasn’t there because he couldn’t move. I have experienced the same thing, after hurting my back. When he’s fit, he trains the same as everyone else. It wasn’t that he was being antisocial, it’s just that he couldn’t move”.

Atlético and Real Madrid to travel to the Wanda on public transport

The players will have to do without the comfort of travelling in style on the official team bus - a luxury Volvo-Irizar-i8 fitted with plush, leather seats, fridge, HD television, Wi-Fi, a coffee machine and even a sofa. With driver Manolo Boza at the wheel, it has taken the squad all over the world since 2016 but Real Madrid’s players will board a more modest vehicle when it’s time to make their way from the training ground and head off to the Metropolitano.
