FT: Atlético Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Atlético have recorded an important win over Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Simeone's side have extended their lead in fourth place to six points over Real Betis in fifth place.

Both sides had really good chances in the second half, but Los Colchoneros managed to hold on.

Atlético also had several chances of their own to finish Real Madrid off, through both Carrasco and substitute Griezmann.

Ancelotti's subs created some late opportunities but the league champions were unable to equalise.

The winning goal came from a first half Yannick Carrasco penalty after Vallejo took Cunha down in the box.

With just three league games to go, Atlético are closer to reaching their Champions League objective and securing fourth spot.

Another glorious chance for the away team. Vinicius crosses from the left wing. Nacho is all alone in the box but somehow manages to head it onto his shoulder and it goes over.

88

OBLAK saves!

It's a fine save. Asensio's free is low and hard but Oblak somehow sees it and gets down to his left to stop it going in.

85

It's that man again. Vinicius curls one from just outside the box, on the left. It's straight at Oblak.

as.com
84

Vinicius crosses but he's probably surprised to find out that Benzema isn't in the box. Felipe clears it. 1-0

as.com

Atlético lead but it could be more

Carrasco hits the post. It remains 1-0 to the home side.

as.com
77

Carrasco cracks the inside of the post!

as.com
76

It just won't go in for Griezmann. Carrasco, in typical Carrasco fashion, dances past three players, before picking out Griezmann. He's 10 yards out, takes a touch, spins and shoots wide.

Griezmann's last goal for Atleti came in the Copa del Rey in January.

as.com
74

Cunha goes for the halfway line lob. He spots Lunin off his line but his shot goes over the bar. That would have been embarrassing for Lunin. The Ukrainian keeper is making his first league start of the season tonight.

as.com
73

Griezmann!

His left-footed effort goes just wide. It looked like it was creeping into the far top corner. The Frenchman has been impressive since coming on.

Atlético have been forced into making a change. Reinildo goes down injured and is replaced by Felipe.

as.com

as.com
57

Griezmann shoots over from 30 yards out after linking up with Carrasco.

as.com
54

Asensio crosses to the back post. Giménez heads it away and it remains 1-0 to Atlético.

as.com

Carrasco crosses to the back post. Cunha goes to volley it but accidentally catches Vallejo in the head. He apologies to the defender.

Real Madrid have been very average tonight. They're league champions with one eye on the Champions League final.

as.com
35

Militao heads away Koke's corner from the right.

as.com

Diego Simeone continues to bounce around his touchline in his ever-present black suit. It looks like he's playing left-back at times.

as.com
31

It's all Atlético now. Vrsaljko sends his cross into Lunin's hands.

as.com
30

Cunha is through on goal. Nacho makes a last-ditch block as the Brazilian places it into the far bottom corner. Marcos Llorente creates the chance with a beautiful backheel.

as.com
27

Lucas Vázquez goes into the book for a challenge on Carrasco, who continues to cause problems for Real Madrid on the left wing. Atlético have been the better team but it remains scoreless in the Spanish capital.

as.com
26

Giménez goes for the long cross-field ball but it goes out of play and Real Madrid have possession again.

Frustrating start for Jovic

The Serbian striker has had very little service so far. There's a good possibility he will leave the club this summer.

as.com
24

Carrasco's inswinger just misses Correa's head in the box.

as.com
23

Real Madrid aren't applying any pressure on Atlético coming out from the back. The home side just have to make better use of their time on the ball.

as.com

Real Madrid team

Ancelotti has sent out a weaker team tonight. After 22 minutes, it remains goalless.

as.com
20

It's a deserved yellow card for Jovic, who clips Correa on the Achilles. I felt that one.

as.com

Camavinga, who was excellent against Man City in the Champions League, has completed all 13 of his attempted passes so far.

as.com
17

Atlético take the corner from the left. Carrasco's cross goes over everyone and out for a goal kick. Definitely not the Belgian's best ever ball.

as.com

Benzema, Modrić, Vinicius, Courtois, Mendy, Carvajal and Valverde are all on the Madrid bench.

as.com
12

Lucas Vázquez pulls down Carrasco on the edge of the box but the referee waves play on. The Wanda Metropolitano is furious with that decision.

as.com

Real Madrid are on an 11-game unbeaten streak against Atlético in LaLiga, their best such derby run against Simeone as coach.

as.com
10

Atlético have threatened early on. Carrasco has been the most dangerous threat on the left. He has the wonderful ability of dropping his shoulder and beating the full-back.

as.com
8

Carrasco goes close!

This time he takes it past Casemiro but drives a low effort wide of Lunin's right hand post.

as.com

LaLiga champions Real Madrid secured the title with four games to spare courtesy of a 4-0 win over Espanyol last weekend.

Benzema, one goal away from equalling Raúl’s Real Madrid record

Karim Benzema is one step away from equaling a record held by a Real Madrid icon as the Frenchman is just one goal away from catching Raúl in the ranking of top scorers in Real Madrid’s history.

The former Lyon striker has found the net 323 times in the famous white shirt in his more than 15 years as a player with the side from the Spanish capital. Benzema has has five games remaining this season to surpass Raúl and would sit behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the overall ranking. The Portuguese striker bagged 450 goals in 438 games for Real Madrid with that record practically unattainable.

No guard of honour for league champions

Atlético have already caused a stir prior to kick-off at Wanda Metropolitano by confirming they will not offer Madrid a guard of honour, with their strong response claiming the performative gesture was not required.

Instead, Atlético congratulated their neighbours in a statement and Diego Simeone followed suit by commending the work of Carlo Ancelotti as he questioned the need for the media frenzy surrounding the guard of honour.

“Always in this search for questions they try to generate controversy, what he said, what he feels,” he added.

“The reality is what the club said in a statement, explained perfectly, to congratulate Real Madrid above all, to the footballers and to their coaching staff because they have done a great job.

“I have great respect for Madrid, who have just become champions, but we have more respect for our people who are with us all day.”

Ancelotti: “Bale wasn’t being antisocial, he couldn’t move”

In his pre-match press conference, Carlo Ancelotti spoke about Gareth Bale's absence from the league title celebrations.

“We are all very fond of Bale. He wasn’t there because he couldn’t move. I have experienced the same thing, after hurting my back. When he’s fit, he trains the same as everyone else. It wasn’t that he was being antisocial, it’s just that he couldn’t move”.
