Atlético Madrid 5-2 Real Madrid: as it happened

Full-time musings:

To call it sheer effort and spirit would undermine the preparation ahead of the game, the huge win in midweek that made them believe, the changes, the tweaks, and the talent. But sometimes things just come together, and when Atlético needed it most, they had everything on their side.

A poor Real Madrid were there, too, the worst we've seen this season. If the home side played a 10/10, their opponents saw their luck run out as the first whistle went, with a slow start allowing the crowd to reach boiling point early and a Robin Le Normand goal tipping things over the edge, into the red zone.

As we might have expected, Real Madrid did what they do: they woke up and began to play. Mbappé and Güler turned things around on the scoreboard - two moments of light in the blurry, unfocused, confused nature of their game until that point.

And that, as far as Real Madrid's match analysis goes today, is that.

Sorloth wedged himself between the two slackest of Madrid's squad during the game, Carreras and Huisen, to header past Courtois before half-time and the whistle went after the break with only one team in the game.

Julián, Julián. On Wednesday against Rayo it was three, today only two. Slacking? From two set pieces, a penalty and a free-kick, he flipped the script even further their way and sent their fans into delirium. Last Wednesday wasn't a flash in the pan, he told the fans.

The game dragged on and Madrid — remember them? — made changes, presumably to try and get themselves back in the game. But it didn't turn any heart rate monitors in the stadium back down to reality, to normal levels, as the songs, cheers, and noise continued to rain down on them.

Griezmann, the surprise exclusion today in place of Atlético's Norwegian giant, came on to make it five. Like a goal in a testimonial, his tap in after another Madrid collapse wasn't cheered: it was applauded, laughed at, smiled at, all with a feeling of 'it doesn't matter that much but it's great fun'.

And it was Griezmann, reminding everyone that despite everything falling into place without him on the pitch, he's still there and he's still brilliant. As are, it turns out, after a long time of thinking otherwise at times over the seasons, are the rest of Atlético Madrid.

That's all folks!

Thanks for tuning into the sensational action today in the Spanish capital.

Joe

Julián Álvarez is on fire recently

The striker was the MVP of the game and rightly so.

Simeone goes round the squad and hugs each one of his players as they stand in front of the fans.

90+8

FULL-TIME!

ATLËTICO SWEEP ASIDE REAL MADRID TO CLAIM AN HISTORIC VICTORY IN LALIGA

90+7

We're past the original added time, but the Atlético fans won't be complaining.

90+6

Mastantuono gets a booking for kicking the ball away in anger.

A simply horrendous error in possession from Madrid sees Álex Baena burst away through the middle channel. He's got Griezmann to his left who he finds in behind the Madrid — can I call it defence anymore? — line and the Frenchman slips the ball underneath Courtois from inside the box.

90+4

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL

 ATLÉTICO MADRID MAKE IT FIVE

90

5 minutes of added time.

90

Simeone runs down the clock:

OFF: Julián Álvarez, Pablo Barrios

ON: Nahuel Moline, Álex Baena

90

Oblak catches a diagonal cross from Rodrygo on the left and crashes to the floor.

90

Madrid are playing with a back three of Carreras, Tchouaméni, andAsencio. Everyone else is a striker.

90

Another Real Madrid change:

OFF: Huijsen

ON: Gonzalo

He's fine. We continue.

89

Le Normand is down with what appears to be a head injury.

88

Over the bar...

88

Real Madrid win a free-kick outside the box, just to the right. Mastantuono to take.

87

The doubling up on Madrid's wingers has been superb from Atlético, who have worked the soles off their boots in the second half to keep the white shirts at bay for so long.

85

Huge roars from the crowd as Atleti push Real Madrid all the way back into their own half and then back to Courtois.

84

A header inside the Atlético box from Lenglet is loose after he hears Oblak behind him. It momentarily drops towards Valverde but the Uruguayan can't connect.

83

Atléti make changes:

OFF: Nico, Hancko

ON: Galán, Griezmann

82

Giuliano gets a booking and is very lucky not to get another straight away for screaming in the face of the referee.

81

Atlético string six, seven, eight passes together in and out of Madrid's pressing structure and the crowd rise to their feet in delight and simply start to laugh.

80

Ten to go... Madrid still trying to find a way through the Atlético defence.

78

Mbappé, Vini Jr, and Rodrygo are all currently occupying the same square of around 10m on the left wing. Meanwhile, there are no players in the box occupying Atlético's defenders.

77

Franco Mastantuono wins a free-kick close to the right touchline in Atlético's half. A decent chance for Madrid to send in the ball.

75

Rodrygo drives inside from the left and fires a shot towards goal but it's well blocked by Le Normand.

74

Fifteen to go. Madrid are seeing more of the ball but their opponents are happy to let them play side to side so far from goal.

72

Madrid attack again — they're getting some form of influence on things now — Carreras goes down inside the Atlético box but the referee gives a big wave that says 'no penalty'.

71

Carreras plays a nice pass down the left that Vini Jr reaches. He squirms inside the box but Atlético's defence do well to clear the danger.

71

Another Madrid change:

OFF: Bellingham

ON: Rodrygo

70

We've got a stoppage as Nico González is down again.

68

Madrid win a free-kick on the left, close to halfway. They take their time to breathe and try to calm down the stadium.

67

Simeone makes his first change:

OFF: Sorloth

ON: Gallagher

66

Back underway and Real Madrid don't know where to turn.

Wow. Atlético's free-kick is given on the left edge of the box. Julián steps up and bends a sublime strike up and over the wall that also curves away from Courtois' outstretched frame. He had no chance. The Metropolitano explodes.

64

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL ATLÉTICO MADRID

JULIÁN ÁLVAREZ SCORES A SENSATIONAL GOAL

62

SAVE! Courtois keeps Madrid alive with a huge save as Sorloth is played through 1vs1 against the stopper.

Nico brought the ball down in the middle of the pitch and drove towards goal before playing left to the huge striker, who couldn't find a gap around the Belgian spider web.

62

Carreras gets a booking for his reaction to the referee blowing for a challenge on Simeone. A sense of frustration is showing from the away side as the clock ticks on.

61

Tchouaméni is now playing at centre-back and Mastantuono is a right-winger in a 4-2-3-1.

60

More Madrid changes:

OFF: Carvajal, Güler

ON: Mastantuono, Camavinga

59

OVER THE BAR. Julián went for goal and the ball flashed over the far corner.

58

A silly challenge from Asencio on Álvarez right on the left edge of the box is about the worst decision you'll see all day. An easy yellow for the referee to give and it's given the fans a huge boost.

57

69,167 here today at the Metropolitano.

56

Lenglet gets his name in the referee's book for a shirt pull on Mbappé.

55

Two in the space of 30 seconds: this time it's Arda Güler who plays a pass towards Carreras that is way too short and Llorente regains possession for the home side.

54

Madrid are once again wobbly: Carvajal misplaces a simple pass out of his own third and Atlético recover the ball.

53

We're back underway and immediately the game is stopped for a foul as Vini Jr leaves one on Giuliano.

52

GOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLL ATLÉTICO MADRID

JULIÁN ÁLVAREZ SCORES FROM THE SPOT!

Álvarez steps up...

Nico is on his feet. It looks like Álvarez will take it.

The player did touch the ball, but the foot was high and that looks like a penalty to me.

50

PENALTY TO ATLÉTICO MADRID

It's Nico González who has gone down after Arda Güler lifted a boot towards his head.

49

Atlético break down the left Nico González latches onto a ball played in behind. He can't get his cross off and Madrid recover...

47

Mbappé gets away from his marker and goes down in the box... nothing given and having just seen the replay, it's the correct decision.

46

Asencio gets in his first challenge of the half - a nice foot in on Julián as the striker looked to turn away behind the Madrid defensive line.

46

Second half underway!

Real Madrid get us going from left to right.

HT

Real Madrid make a change:

OFF: Militao

ON: Asencio

The players are in the tunnel and we should be getting underway once again any time now.

Changes at half-time?

Centre-back Asencio looks to be coming on for the second half, as he's warming up in his full kit while we wait for the teams.

Mbappé continues to make history

The Frenchman has started the season in fantastic form for Real Madrid.

Here's how Sofascore have the game:

The boffins in white coats at Sofascore Towers have the home side ahead on both xG and big chances.

Who said there wouldn't be goals?

Me. It was me. I said there wouldn't be goals.

And I was wrong: this has been a party of goals and chances and everything in between, with the derbi madrileñoliving up to expectations.

Atlético got off to the better start, with high possession numbers and plenty of chances created as their opponents failed to land a glove on them. The home side's dominance was rewarded with a goal from Le Normand, who headed in from close range.

And then came the Madrid comeback. Arda Güler sent Mbappé away down the line to drill home from the right, and then Madrid's dominance started to show. A little tactical tweak gave them a bigger presence in midfield, and Güler himself fired past Oblak to take the lead on the scoreboard.

But Atlético came back fighting, with cross after cross towards the end causing problems for the defence in white: Sorloth's leap beat both Huijsen and Carreras to draw level just before the break.

45+9

HALF-TIME

All square in a fascinating match at the Metropolitano!

45+8

CLOSE. Again, it's a diagonal cross from the left side that flashes across the Real Madrid goal. All the defenders in white left it for each other and the gasps from the crowd say it all: someone in red and white should have taken a gamble.

45+6

Vini Jr latches onto a long ball over the top but he can't bring it under his spell and that gives Oblak enough time to come out and collect it.

It's superbmovement from the giant striker to remain hidden despite his stature and connect with the ball while running backwards. That's why Simeone included him in the XI.

Koke's cross from the left is sent diagonally towards the far post. Sorloth finds space between both Huijsen and Carreras to thunder a header past Courtois!

45+3

GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL ATLÉTICO MADRID

AND THIS ONE WILL COUNT

SORLOTH!!!!

45+1

CLOSE. Nice work from Real Madrid, who had Atlético scrambling behind them. It's a delightful move that sees Carreras played in by Vini Jr, and the cross finds Mbappé before being laid off to Güler. His shot flies just over Oblak's goal from the edge of the box.

45

Seven (7) minutes added on.

45

Back underway.

NO GOAL.

Easy decision. It was a handball. Don't @ me.

VAR is taking a look.

However, replays show that it may have hit his arm on the way in...

LENGLET

43

GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL ATLÉTICO MADRID

AND WE ARE BACK LEVEL.

43

Atlético win a corner after a poor Carreras clearance.

42

He's back on his feet and we're underway again.

41

We've got a stoppage as Carvajal goes down. It was a late challenge from Nico on the full-back.

A brief tactical tangent:

As that goal happened, I was just writing that Tchouaméni has been regularly moving into Madrid's back line over the past 5 minutes or so, with the midfield taking on a triangle shape with Valverde at the base behind Arda and Bellingham

This is giving Madrid an overload in the middle against Barrios and Koke, and it's meaning that Llorente is covered when he steps out.

39

JULIÁN ÁLVAREZ HITS THE POST. The shot from the striker was from range and had the beating of Courtois in the Real Madrid goal. Screams from all sides of the stadium as the game heats up.

38

Back underway.

Mbappé takes the ball and plays left to Vin Jr. The Brazilian sets off down the wing before cutting back suddenly, leaving two defenders on the floor.

He sends a low cross to the penalty spot where Arda Güler is there to send a ferocious shot low and past Oblak to turn the scoreboard around!

36

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLL REAL MADRID

ARDA GÜLER

33

Madrid counter with Bellingham, who plays wide to Vini Jr. The cross is sent in and goes behind for a corner to the away side.

31

That Madrid goal has just dropped Atlético's tempo enough for the away side to impose themselves slightly. The first whistles can be heard from the crowd, who are not happy with the amount of time the white shirts are being allowed on the ball.

30

Half an hour gone and all of a sudden, Madrid look tidy on the ball as Atleti defend.

28

Mbappé takes on two players as he cuts inside from the right. He looks to feed Vini Jr inside the box but Atlético swarm the ball like bees who have worn the wrong colour to work.

That's 8 goals for Mbappé in the league this season.

27

Back underway.

Arda plays the ball down the right wing into the feet of Kylian Mbappé, who bursts behind the defensive line and fires a laser-guided effort low into the far corner of the goal.

Out. Of. Nowhere.

25

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL REAL MADRID ARE LEVEL

KYLIAN MBAPPÉ

24

Llorente is dropping into the back line to make a 5-3-2 in defence, something that's giving them a huge advantage whenever Madrid's midfield get the ball: the attackers have no space as the defensive block spreads from one touchline to the other.

23

Nico González sees a shot deflected behind for a corner. Madrid at sixes and sevens at the back.

22

SAVE. Courtois again. Nico slides Sorloth through the gaping gap bigger than Dracula's centre parting and the Belgian races out to sweep up.

20

Giuliano Simeone is blown offside after a sublime pass found him from deep. Madrid are offering nothing on or off the ball as things stand, and Atlético are enjoying themselves.

19

CLOSE. Hancko and Le Normand are inches away from getting on the end of a dangerous Nico González cross from the right.

Madrid are struggling here...

18

Arda Güler gets away with what was a certain yellow for a late, late leg on Nico González. Simeone is going crazy on the touchline at the decision, as are the crowd.

17

BIGTACKLE form Bellingham inside his own box as Atlético threaten again. Julián Álvarez did superbly well down the left side this time before sending a ball into Barrios.

Thankfully for the away side, Bellingham's leg was long enough and he made contact with the ball before a shot from close range could be fired from the Spaniard's boot.

15

We're back underway.

The noise. Oh, the noise.

A deep free kick is cleared and finds Giuliano on the right side of Madrid's box. The winger sends a sensational ball into the danger zone and Robin Le Normand is there to beat his marker and find the back of the net. Simple but deadly.

14

GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLL ATLÉTICO MADRID

LE NORMAND

13

Bellingham leaves one on Giuliano and the home crowd get their first roar out of their throats today.

11

SAVE. The first of the game. Atleti break down the right and Sorloth's looping header looks to be heading over the goal. However, it catches everyone off guard and Courtois is forced to leap backwards and tip it over the bar at the last second.

10

This is Real Madrid's first solid spell of possession here as we see the home side drop into their block on the edge of the box. It's Barrios and Llorente who do well to push the red and white shirts out of their defensive zone as they force their opponents back into their own half.

8

Güler has sailed over to the left side to join in the fun as Mbappé and Vini Jr crowd the area and drag opposition players with them. Some nice passing ensues but it ultimately rolls behind for a goal kick after a loose Vini touch.

7

Simeone beats both Carreras and Huijsen to a Barrios pass down the right wing after the young midfielder stole possession from Bellingham.

He sends a low cross towards Sortloth but there's no real threat on the ball and Madrid sweep up.

6

The Real Madrid doctor has just shown a thumbs up to the bench and it looks like he'll be OK to carry on. The game is back underway.

5

Squeals from the Madrid bench as Militao is down, clutching his foot. The doctors rush on and the game is paused.

4

HUGE TACKLE from Militao as Sorloth races away down the middle of the pitch. He looked potentially offside but that intervention inside the Madrid box was superb from the Brazilian.

3

Arda Güler has started on the right, where we've seen Mastantuono in previous games, while Bellingham takes up a position in the middle of the pitch. Madrid are pressing in a 4-4-2, as predicted.

2

The corner hits the first man — Hancko — and it goes behind for a goal kick.

1

The home side start well with the ball down the left and Julián spins inside the box to win an early corner.

1

AND WE ARE OFF!

The home side get us going in the derbi madrileño!

A lovely hug between Koke and Carvajal ahead of kick-off.

"A myth, a faith" reads the pre-game display

The huge mosaic was promised to be "spectacular" by the Atlético Madrid social media team, and I must say that it is quite impressive.

As is the noise as the teams make their way out of the tunnel and onto the pitch.

The players are in the tunnel!

It's serious faces all round for both sides, no inter-team hugs in sight.

A final reminder of the starting XIs:

Atlético Madrid:

Oblak; Llorente, Le Normand, Lenglet, Hancko; Simeone, Barrios, Koke, Nico G; Sorloth, Álvarez.

Real Madrid:

Courtois; Carvajal, Huijsen, Militao, Carreras; Tchouaméni, Bellingham, Arda, Valverde; Mbappé, Vini Jr.

Will history repeat itself?

I hate to break it to you so close to kickoff, but if you're here for a feast of goals, you're likely to be in the wrong place.

This game, over the years, has been a tight, tense, scrappy affair, with the last 3 LaLiga matches between the two sides seeing the points shared after battling it out to a 1-1 scoreline.

Will we see the same today? I'm not a betting man, but a score draw doesn't seem like a terrible idea.

Cholo's star man

Susana Vera / REUTERS

LaLiga - Atletico Madrid v Rayo Vallecano

We all, myself included, thought that Griezmann was Simeone's star man in the side. It turns out that it's actually Julián, the player Cholo called "the best" in his pre-game press conference.

It's hard to see him dropping the Argentine who, in his last 6 home games, has scored 8 goals and got 2 assists for Atlético.

El Cholo pre-game quotes:

“I see Julián is doing well, happy, committed to the club and the team. The fans love him a lot. Hopefully he can have a great match.”

Diego Pablo Simeone, Atlético Madrid

“There are eight new players, and seven last season. We are in that process and on that path to try to be a better team — we have done good things and others that need improving in this first stretch of the journey. I hope we evolve, match after match, better each time.”

Diego Pablo Simeone, Atlético Madrid

"It will be a match clogged in midfield, with decisive transitions. That’s the match I picture.”

Diego Pablo Simeone, Atlético Madrid

“I don’t value the past, I live in the present. I see that Real Madrid has grown collectively, they attack positionally very well, with defensive work that engages them in pressing higher up. That’s why they have won all six matches.”

Diego Pablo Simeone, Atlético Madrid

Fifteen minutes to go!

The players are finishing their pre-game warmups and are off down the tunnel for the final team talk before kick off!

Atlético Madrid's dressing room is ready!

The fancy stadium has some of the most luxurious dressing rooms I've ever seen, with the home team space genuinely bigger than my flat.

And it's also nice to confirm in this photo that Griezmann will indeed be wearing his delightful long-sleeved version of the home shirt, which isn't as awful as some of the recent editions they've been given by Nike.

Xabi Alonso pre-game quotes:

“We have to focus on the match, on the pitch. Vini is a key player for us — the other day I liked many things he did. I like seeing him smile.”

X. Alonso, Real Madrid

“I haven’t watched them (the derbies), Atlético has changed a lot. I’ve focused more on this season’s matches. Atlético evolves every year. They will be able to aspire to everything. They are a team with a lot of energy, that demands you play at a very high pace.”

X. Alonso, Real Madrid

“We are doing quite a lot of things well, we must remain convinced that this is a good path. Try to be unpredictable when we have the ball, not have just one way of attacking. Without the ball we have made steps forward.”

X. Alonso, Real Madrid

“[Bellingham] is an attacking midfielder. He can take part in build-up and in finishing. We have to reach him with the best possible advantage so that he becomes decisive — now he’s going to start.”

X. Alonso, Real Madrid

A peek into the away dressing room

Real Madrid are, thankfully, in their white home strip today and not a sponsor special bright green and yellow creation.

Here's how things look in Madrid ahead of kick-off

It's a lovely autumn day, with the sun shining without being a complete hindrance to daily life.

El Derbi: where the rock and roll begins

The last time a derby was played at the Metropolitano, it was marked by Julián Álvarez’s penalty taken with a double touch – whether accidental or deliberate depending on your colors, white or red-and-white. That was back in March, in the Champions League. In La Liga, the most recent memory is of lighters raining down on Courtois’s goal, forcing a 20-minute stoppage. The tension, or “passion,” as Xabi Alonso calls it, is always guaranteed.

This is also the first high-profile game of the season for both teams, courtesy of La Liga’s “guided” draw, which allows the giants to enjoy a sort of extended preseason at the start. Atlético are the exception, having already faced Villarreal, now sitting third.

Get your fill of pre-match reading...

What a noise!

Both the Atlético de Madrid players and the Real Madrid have just emerged from the tunnel for their pre-game warmups!

The crowd has erupted at the Metropolitano!

Who to watch: Atlético Madrid

My one to watch for the home side today is former Real Madrid man, Marcos Llorente.

Against Rayo Vallecano he was my MVP, starting from a right-sided defensive position and moving into midfield and even attack as the ball progressed, most at his feet.

To explain just how varied his game was, here are a few stats:

89% pass success

3 clearances

1 assist

1 shot on target

3/4 accurate crosses

If you can use those stats to tell me what position he played, I'll give you the control of this live feed and you can talk tactics for 3 hours. The player was simply unstoppable and along with Álvarez's scoring touch, the reason Atleti go into this game with any hope at all.

Nine points between the two sides

Is that already too many points for Atlético to gain on Madrid this season?

It's crazy that the question is valid ahead of kick-off on what is only match-day 7 of the season, but the form of both sides has put those words in the mouths of fans across the country.

Today is a huge, huge game for both sides...

Who to watch: Real Madrid

He's young, talented, fearless, and loved by the fans. Of course, I'm talking about both Arda Güler and Franco Mastantuono here. As for my one to watch, I'm undecided between the two, but let's go with the Turkish midfielder.

Arda has two goals and two assists so far this season across 7 games played in all competitions, and he gets the nod today from the coach, who appears to trust the youngster.

The youngster has created 20 chances in LaLiga - the most of any player - ahead of teammate Kylian Mbappé in second place with 18.

JESUS ALVAREZ ORIHUELA / DIARIO AS

Who's the ref?

Get your sticker books out, it's time to tick off the referee for the game. LaLiga's faithful viewers will all recognise señor Javier Alberola Rojas, who is taking charge of proceedings at the Estadio Riyadh Air Metropolitano today.

He is a LaLiga local, with over 150 games in the top division under his belt.

In his previous outings this season, he's given out just one red card, for Girona goalkeeper Gazzaniga. That was in a 1-3 loss to Rayo; today's match is a completely different beast.

Here's how Sofascore see the game

We've got English football from the 90s on show today, with 442s from the coaches.

Of course, it's a lot more nuanced than that nowadays, but I doubt getting it up to the big lad is a bad idea when you've got Álvarez running in behind Sortloth.

Atlético arrive at the Metropolitano!

The home side have made their way to the stadium ahead of kick-off.

How Madrid come into the game

Xabi Alonso's side, as mentioned, have a 100% record in the league so far and that was extended to 6 games with a solid win over Levante

Vinicius Jr opened the scoring around the half-hour mark with a goal that he said was perfected with the help of Luka Modric. It certainly appeared so, as the Brazilian used the outstep of his right boot to curve the shot around a couple of defenders and into the far corner.

From there, Madrid looked more comfortable as the game went on. Franco Mastantuono doubled their lead before half time and despite Levante getting one back after the break, it felt like the comeback was only ever on for a few moments.

In the same way Julián stepped up for Atlético on Wendesday, Mbappé did the same for his side, scoring two in two minutes. One came from a sensational panenka from the penalty spot after he was tripped up down the right side, the other a typical finish from a former Real Madrid legend, Ronaldo Nazario, as he went round the goalkeeper to tap in from close range.

ATLÉTICO MADRID XI REVEALED

Simeone has gone with Guiliano, Nico, and Sortloth in the XI, as Griezmann is dropped to the bench!

REAL MADRID XI REVEALED

Bellingham is in for Mastantuono in a surprise move from Xabi Alonso!

Of course I had just written a huge paragraph on how Mastantuono was the man to watch for Madrid today...

24/09/25 PARTIDO PRIMERA DIVISION JORNADA 6
ATLETICO DE MADRID - RAYO VALLECANO
TERCER GOL JULIAN ALVAREZ 3-2 ALEGRIA

DANI SANCHEZ / DIARIO AS

Last time out...

Atleti come into the game off the back of a much-needed 3-2 home victory against city rivals Rayo Vallecano.

Ahead of this game, tension was high at the Metropolitano as fans were eager to see their wobbly start to the season put behind them once and for all.

Julián Álvarez got the home side off to the perfect start in the game, scoring a superb volley early on. However, Rayo held their own and Chavarría scored what might end up being goal of the season come the end of the campaign.

Things got tense as the game wore on and Álvaro García put one past Oblak with just under 15 minutes to go to make it 1-2 and send those inside the stadium into meltdown.

Step up, Julián Álvarez. The Argentine marksman quickly got one back to draw level before taking the ball from the right, squiggling inside on his left foot and unleashing a rocket into the top corner from distance that left Batalla only able to watch.

Normally, after the game, Simeone is the first man down the tunnel. Not this time. After the final whistle blew, he stood on the pitch with his players in front of the fans, eager to make them aware of how important they were for the win, and how important they'll be today.

Get ready for an intense atmosphere!

Atlético Madrid's social media team have revealed that there will be a "spectacular" mosaic put up around the ground by the fans ahead of kick-off, with those attending encouraged to get to their seats well before kick-off.

Real Madrid are top of the pops

Los Blancos are the only team in LaLiga still with a perfectrecord, having recorded 6 wins from 6 so far this season.

Granted, their run hasn't been too tough, with a lot of their opponents struggling in the bottom half of the league, but points on the board are better than no points.

We'll get to it later, but I wouldn't be so sure of their 100% win streak continuing today: all I'll say is that Atlético away normally yields only one result.

Here's how things look for the home side

It's been a tricky start for Atleti this season, their worst ever over 14 years of El Cholo.

After 6 games they sit on just 9 points, with a late goal against city rivals Rayo Vallecano in an extraordinary 3-2 win (more on that later) needed to finally start climbing up the table.

Dare I say it, but a loss today could see them out of the title race already...

Team news: Real Madrid

His starting XI is quite a lot easier to predict than that of his counterpart, save for a potential Jude Bellingham surprise entrance into the lineup.

Team news: Atlético Madrid

Cholo Simeone will be without José María Giménez for the clash, as well as new signing Thiago Almada

There are quite a few doubts in terms of the lineup as well for Atlético Madrid, with Simeone keeping his cards close to his chest ahead of the game.
