Is Gavi staying at FC Barcelona?

The departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba will have a positive side effect on Barcelona. The pair leaving will see Barcelona save on two large salaries, which will allow the club to keep Gavi. The Andalusian has a clause in his contract whereby he could terminate his contract with Barça for free if the club is unable to sign him before 1 July.

New deals for defenders and possible Messi return

At Barça, there has always been peace of mind around Gavi. “He will stay and will spend his entire career at Barça. We will register him,” director of football Mateu Alemany said a month ago. But it was necessary to reduce the salary count at Camp Nou to fit Gavi into the club’s plans. Busquets and Alba free up some €40m that will not only allow Gavi’s registration but will also give the green light for Ronald Araújo’s contract renewal and for a new deal for Alejandro Balde. This is all happening, while the Blaugrana hope to secure the return of Leo Messi.

The lawsuit that Barça filed at the end of January in the Mercantile Court against LaLiga over article 93.6 of the economic control regulations is still pending. After allowing Gavi’s registration as a first-team player, the court revoked it days later due to Barça’s late submission. The matter has not yet been resolved, but the situation is less urgent for the club now with the departures of Busquets and Alba this summer.
