After disappointing loan spells with Atlético Madrid and United, Barça could rescue Sergio Reguilón from being out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur.

Barcelona could spring a surprise in their efforts to strengthen their defence for the new season by signing former Real Madrid defender Sergio Reguilón, AS understands. The left-back is under contract with Tottenham Hotspur, although he isn’t part of the Premier League club’s plans. As his current deal has only one year left to run, Spurs would prefer to sell the 27-year-old now in order not to lose him for nothing next summer.

Reguilón’s Real Madrid past

After coming through the Real Madrid academy and making 22 first-team appearances for Los Blancos in 2018/19, Reguilón enjoyed a successful loan spell with Sevilla the following year. Although the LaLiga side wanted to sign him permanently, his form attracted the attention from the Premier League and Spurs, who paid €30 million ($32.77 million) for his services in the summer of 2020.

However, his time in England has not gone the way he would’ve wished. Reguilón hasn’t played for his parent club since 2022 and has failed to shine in loan spells with Atlético de Madrid and Manchester United, although he did fare rather better at Brentford, where he spent the second half of last season. He has now returned to Spurs, where he is surplus to requirements.

Barça looking for Balde alternative, Cancelo talks stall

Alejandro Balde is the only recognised left-back in the Barcelona first-team squad at present, with new head coach Hansi Flick looking for reinforcements.

The Catalans have held talks with Manchester City over the permanent transfer of João Cancelo, although those are now at a standstill.

Academy players Gerard Martín and Álex Valle impressed on the preseason tour of the United States, although Barça would like to have an experienced alternative to Balde. If the price is right, they see Reguilón, despite his recent struggles, as a suitable option.
