Chelsea sign Morgan Rogers: Only three players have ever cost more

The Premier League has smashed another transfer record. Chelsea officially announced the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal worth €137 million (about $156 million), making the England international the second most expensive signing in Premier League history. Rogers has signed a six-year contract with an option for a seventh.

Chelsea beats Arsenal to Rogers

The 23-year-old is coming off the best season of his career and had become the centerpiece of Aston Villa’s rise under Emery.

Several clubs pursued the versatile attacker, with Arsenal spending months trying to negotiate a deal. But Chelsea’s financial muscle ultimately proved decisive, convincing Villa to accept an offer that was simply too good to turn down.

The transfer makes Rogers the second most expensive signing in Premier League history, trailing only Liverpool’s €150 million ($171 million) move for Alexander Isak last summer.

The latest blockbuster deal is another reminder that the Premier League’s spending power remains unmatched. No other league can compete financially with England’s biggest clubs.

The move is especially striking given that Chelsea will not play European soccer this season after finishing 10th in the Premier League. Even so, the club has continued to spend aggressively in an effort to ensure that disappointing campaign is not repeated.

Aston Villa cashes in after historic season

Rogers appeared in 55 matches during the 2025-26 season, scoring 14 goals and adding 11 assists as Aston Villa enjoyed one of the greatest campaigns in club history.

Villa secured automatic qualification for the UEFA Champions League and also lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy in May, with Rogers playing a central role throughout the season.

Replacing a player of his importance will be no easy task, but the massive transfer fee gives Villa significant flexibility to strengthen the squad.

One interesting wrinkle is that Middlesbrough, currently playing in England’s second tier, is expected to receive roughly €17 million (about $19.4 million) thanks to a sell-on clause negotiated when Rogers left the club in 2024.

Why Xabi Alonso wanted Rogers

Rogers appears to be an ideal fit for the project Xabi Alonso is building at Chelsea.

The England international is expected to compete for the left wing role, an area Chelsea has struggled to consistently fill with top-end talent in recent years. If Alonso opts for a different setup, Rogers also has the versatility to play as an attacking midfielder behind the striker, a role similar to the one Florian Wirtz thrived in under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.

Reports in England say Alonso personally called Rogers during the negotiations, and that conversation played a key role in convincing the player to make the move.

One of the biggest transfers in soccer history

At 23, Rogers has already become a regular with England and made his major international tournament debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. England reached the semifinals, where Rogers started in the loss to Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

His move to Chelsea now places him among the most expensive transfers in soccer history. Only Neymar (€222 million/$253 million), Kylian Mbappé (€180 million/$205 million), and Alexander Isak (€150 million/$171 million) have commanded higher transfer fees.

Now comes the real test.

A record-breaking price tag brings enormous expectations, and soccer history is full of expensive signings who failed to justify the investment. Chelsea is betting Rogers will prove to be one of the exceptions.
