Barcelona release Catalan senyera flag fourth kit: meaning, where to buy, price...
The club have unveiled a shirt which resembles the flag of the region of Catalonia; to be worn at the weekend.
As became tradition under Joan Laporta during his first stint at President of the club, FC Barcelona have stepped up their efforts in promoting themselves as the representation of Catalonia to the world, this time unveiling a new shirt to be worn in official matches with the flag of the Catalan province, known as the senyera.
The club released the shirt on 27 January with a promotional video showing the unique architecture of the city along with young players Pedri and Ansu, who showed off the garment for the men’s team while defender Mapi León promoted the shirt for FC Barcelona Femení.
What is the senyera flag?
The senyera flag is yellow with four horizontal red lines across from end to end. The flag was historically the symbol of the Crown of Aragón, the part of Spain that, until the 18th century, occupied most of the eastern side of the peninsula. Nowadays, the flag solely represents the Community of Barcelona, although variations of the flag exist for Valencia, Aragón and the Balearic Islands.
The legend says that Count Guifré el Pilós of Barcelona, who lived from 840 to 897, painted his golden shield with four blood-covered fingers right before his death, creating the symbol. The more realistic version of events, however, is that the four red lines on a yellow background was the heraldic symbol of the House of Barcelona.
Which other Barcelona kits have the senyera?
Most, if not all Barcelona kits make reference to the senyera, be it a small flag on the back of the neck or a detail somewhere else. For this edition, the club have decided to go with the logo ‘+CATALUNYA +BARÇA’, leaving no room for interpretation when it comes to the symbology of the design.
According to FC Barcelona’s official statement, the kit “the jersey pays tribute to the club’s roots, featuring the Catalan senyera flag on the chest and taking inspiration from the captain’s armband. Throughout its 124 years of history, Barça has become known worldwide for its inclusive approach, while remaining closely linked to Catalonia and its culture, the Catalan way of life, and for conveying its values to its fans around the world.”
Barcelona have worn the senyera shirt on different occasions, for example against Real Madrid in April 2021 they wore a home shirt with the typical blue and red that faded into a Catalan flag. Against Atlético Madrid they wore the shirt pictured below, winning 0-1 thanks to a late Lionel Messi goal.
How much does it cost? Where can I buy one?
The 2022-23 fourth shirt is on sale on the FC Barcelona official website at a price of €94.99 for men and women with the children’s version costing €74.99.
When will the senyera kit be worn?
The shirt will be worn in the LaLiga Santander game against Girona at Montilivi this afternoon, a game you can follow live on AS USA.
