Barcelona sporting director Deco met in London on Thursday with representatives from the agency managing Chelsea striker João Pedro, with a potential move to the Catalan club on the table.

Two key messages came out of the meeting. First, the 24-year-old Brazilian is open to joining Barça next season. Second, the operation is extremely difficult to pull off.

Beyond Barcelona’s ongoing financial constraints, Chelsea are not keen to part ways with the forward just a year after signing him from Brighton for €65 million (about $75 million). His current market valuation sits around €75 million (roughly $87 million).

Chelsea’s stance could be decisive

The next step depends on how Deco’s initial approach develops, especially with changes underway at Chelsea following the arrival of Xabi Alonso.

If the new manager views João Pedro as essential to his project, Barcelona’s hopes would take a significant hit. However, if Alonso prefers not to keep players who are unhappy or unsettled, an opening could emerge.

Barcelona’s attacking rebuild under pressure

With Robert Lewandowski expected to leave once his departure is made official, Barcelona must move carefully, as Hansi Flick has already warned, and avoid mistakes in rebuilding their attack.

Lewandowski is not the only concern. Ferran Torres, who scored 20 official goals this season, still has an uncertain future. If the ex-Manchester City forward leaves on a free next summer, Barça’s problems in the striker position could effectively double.

Julián Álvarez, Deco’s preferred target, currently looks out of reach. If he leaves Atlético Madrid, the Spanish club is reluctant to sell him to a direct rival.

That leaves João Pedro as one of the profiles that fits what Deco is seeking.

The profile Barça want

Barcelona are targeting a forward without an oversized ego, capable of combining productivity and work rate. João Pedro fits that description with 20 goals and nine assists this season.

He is versatile, comfortable drifting wide, and able to repeat high-intensity runs, a key trait for defensive pressing and creating space in attack. His profile also aligns with Barcelona’s desire to better support Lamine Yamal, offering passing options and tactical movement to open lanes.

Direct contact took place in London on Thursday. What happens next will depend on how the situation evolves between all parties involved.
