Barcelona vs Almería: how they shape up
The game itself has been overshadowed by Gerard Piqué's announcement that this will be his last home game for Barcelona before retiring from the sport. Coach Xavi Hernández has confirmed that the legendary defender will also be available for selection for the midweek game at Osasuna and when asked whether Piqué would start against Almería said, “We’ll see.”
Despite a dreadfully disappointing European campaign (for those of you who’ve been living under a rock, Barça didn’t qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League and will drop down the Europa League in the new year), their domestic campaign has been a successful one so far, with a defeat to Real Madrid and a draw against Rayo Vallecano the only dropped points after 12 matches. 31 points taken from those fixtures leave the Catalans just a point behind Madrid.
Almería, promoted from LaLiga Smartbank in the summer, currently sit in 13th spot in the standings having recovered well from a run of four successive defeats in September, which had left them in the relegation zone. They recorded three victories in October, although all of them were at home and their away form still needs some serious work. After drawing at Elche on 22 August, Rubi’s men have lost all five of their subsequent matches on the road, which doesn’t bode especially well for this weekend’s trip to Catalonia.
Barcelona vs Almería: team news
As mentioned, all that is being talked about from a Barcelona perspective is whether Piqué will start at Camp Nou for the very last time. With Jules Koundé and Ronald Araújo both certain to miss out and Andreas Christensen available but lacking match fitness, there is a reasonable chance that the former Manchester United man could be given the nod in central defence. Sergi Roberto and Memphis Depay have been joined on the treatment table this week by Franck Kessié, who is expected to be out for around a month.
Almería, meanwhile, have had some good news on the fitness front. Adrián Embarba, Álex Centelles and Marko Milovanovic have all been struggling with injuries lately but are all fit to play, leaving only long-term injury victims Juanjo Neto and Iván Martos on the sidelines. Rubi has switched between using four and five-man defences so far this season but has yet to come across the magic formula that would see his side start picking up points away from home.
