Another lackluster performance provoked a stern reaction from the Anfield crowd after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Saturday afternoon. That only fueled the fire surrounding Arne Slot’s future at the club after what has been a disappointing title defense campaign.

Champions will have to wait

Slot had to face the media after the boos rang out at the end of the match. When asked about the fans voicing their displeasure with the team and the performance, the Dutch manager said, “That probably has to do with us not winning, so a draw from the last five games. We won three last week and today a draw - that’s not what we want, we want more, we want to win them all five.”

Liverpool went into the match with a chance to secure a top five spot in the league and with that a spot in next year’s Champions League, but they were only able to manage a draw, which just makes things a little tighter heading into the final two matches of the season. The draw leaves the door open for Aston Villa to take possession of fourth place should they beat Burley on Sunday.

Ryan Gravenberch scored the opener in the 6th minute and it seemed as though it was going to be a day that would ease the minds of some of the anxious fans around the stands at Anfield, but the final 84 minutes did anything but that. The result is disappointing, but it was the way that Liverpool were playing. The lack of attacking ambition and the shortage of creativity in the final third allowed Chelsea to equalize and come out of Merseyside with a point.

Slot on the hot seat?

While open play was lacking in ideas, Slot did say there were a chance or two on the set piece that could have changed the game. ”But as I said, last week we had a negative balance in our set-piece, today again we’re conceding a set-piece, and we’re very, very close with Virgil [van Dijk] to score one ourselves,” said Slot.

There has been plenty of speculation around Slot’s future at the club after winning the Premier League in his first year at Liverpool. This year things haven’t gone as smoothly and with Xabi Alonso currently unemployed, there is a good portion of people who wouldn’t mind a change being made on the touchline.

Slot knows there are two matches left, and he has one aim to close out the season. ”It completely makes sense that people are disappointed if we don’t win, because that’s what we want, we want to win. It should be like this if Liverpool doesn’t win, no one can ever be happy with that."
