Barcelona vs Girona preview

Barcelona

For all the off-pitch turmoil, Barcelona’s performances this year have been a model of consistency and good sense. The side is on course to beat the previous La Liga record for clean sheets set in 1993/94 and currently boasts a 12-point lead over Real Madrid in the table.

The only disappointment for the Catalan club has been the early exits in European competition, but that does allow head coach Xavi to concentrate on domestic matters for the remainder of the campaign. After waiting four years for a Spanish league title Barcelona will want to wrap up the season in style by continuing to perform to the very end.

Girona

Fellow Catalan side Girona were promoted to La Liga through the play-offs last season having finished sixth in the second tier. They could well have been expected to struggle in the top flight but their swashbuckling style of play has won them both matches and admirers. They have scored and conceded a combined 84 goals in 27 La Liga outings this season, the most of any La Liga side, and will look to take the game to Barcelona on next Monday.

Ukrainian winger Viktor Tsygankov has caught the eye since his January switch from Dynamo Kyiv and he is currently averaging a goal roughly every 90 minutes in Spain.

Barcelona vs Girona prediction

This Catalan derby brings together two diametrically opposed sides in a fascinating encounter. The elite talent and misery defence makes Barcelona the clear favourites but Girona have been involved in a number of chaotic games this season: a 6-2 win against Almeria; a 3-5 loss to Real Sociedad. Expect a Barca win, but expect goals.

Prediction: Barcelona 4-2 Girona
