Barcelona’s Champions League plan for Newcastle United revealed

Barcelona will touch down in England on Sunday morning feeling relieved. The team preserved its four-point lead in La Liga after a stripped-down performance in which Hansi Flick allowed key players like Raphinha, Pedri and Fermín an hour of rest. Injuries and even the condition of the pitch have partly dictated what now looks like the natural starting lineup for Tuesday’s game at St. James’ Park.

Along with Joan García – who was very solid at San Mamés – the defense appears almost settled. Eric and João Cancelo are set to play at fullback, while Cubarsí and Gerard Martín, who finished the Athletic game somewhat fatigued, will start in central defense. Marc Bernal and Pedri will be tasked with running the team in midfield, with Flick confident they can give stability to a side that struggled at times in Bilbao.

The two combined well against Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey, and in principle they should both be available despite Bernal’s recent stomach issues and the heavy workload Pedri carried in the cup. Lamine Yamal, Fermín and Raphinha will provide the attacking thrust behind the striker. The big question is who leads the line.

Flick has handed Robert Lewandowski plenty of Champions League “candies,” including the earlier meeting with Newcastle in the league phase. Ferran Torres’ poor scoring run could open the door for a change, although the Polish striker has not exactly been in dominant form either. Marcus Rashford or Dani Olmo are more distant possibilities. Among other reasons, Flick did not deploy the English forward as a No. 9 when he came on against Atlético for Ferran, and Olmo needed support in the box from Ronald Araújo in that game.

Barcelona has some clear instructions heading into Tuesday’s clash. First: contain Newcastle’s explosive starts at home. The Magpies often burst out of the blocks at St. James’ Park – something they showed again Saturday against Manchester City with Harvey Barnes’ early goal before Pep Guardiola’s side regained control.

The second message ties directly to the first and concerns lapses in concentration. Barcelona already knows the consequences of entering a game without the right intensity. The 4–0 loss to Atlético knocked them out of the Copa del Rey. Flick wants a team fully switched on from the opening whistle, and players such as Fermín and Raphinha could add an extra dose of intensity.

And finally, experience. A subtle moment in Bilbao revealed a possible shift in Barcelona’s approach. In the closing minutes the team defended deeper, abandoning Flick’s usual high line and retreating toward its own box. Lamine Yamal could be seen repeatedly telling Raphinha and Lewandowski not to press but to hold their positions.

It was clearly planned. Last season’s defeat in Milan left a mark, and Flick now appears less reluctant to have the team drop back to protect a lead if it feels more secure defensively. Barcelona arrives in Newcastle with a clear plan.

Gavi travels without medical clearance

Barcelona flew directly from Bilbao to Newcastle. The club confirmed that Gavi traveled with the squad despite not yet receiving medical clearance, joining the group in England to support the team in what is seen as a pivotal game for the season.
