Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Chelsea: as it happened

Chelsea lose away from home again

They will believe that they can get something from the second leg after tonight's performance.

Dortmund record 1-0 win

Chelsea had their chances but couldn't take them. Potter's side will believe they can still go through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Adeyemi's 63rd-minute goal was superb. He ran from inside his own half and then beat Enzo and Kepa to slot it home and give the home side the lead.

Dortmund take that 1-0 lead into the second leg at Stamford Bridge. It's all set up for a cracking European tie.

And there's the final whistle!

Dortmund win 1-0

Kobel has been rock-solid tonight.

Enzo bends one into the top corner but Kobel dives to keep it out.

So close!

If Dortmund can hold on, it will be their seventh consecutive win in 2023.

Ryerson goes through the back of Mount right in front of the dugouts and it all kicks off between both dugouts and both sets of players. Ryerson is booked for the challenge.

Benfica are beating Club Brugge 2-0 in tonight's other game.

Ziyech puts the free wide. 1-0

Ozcan pushes Joao Felix over.

Chelsea have a free 30 yards from goal.

It's just not going in for Chelsea. The Yellow Wall comes alive again.

Chelsea link up nicely. Enzo slips Joao Felix in. It's an easy stop for Kobel.

They have had five shots on target.

James sends in a cross. Schlotterbeck clears.

Poor admin.

Adeyemi goal

It's one the 21-year-old won't forget!

Adeyemi puts on the afterburners to create his own goal and Dortmund have the lead!

He runs from inside his own half as Dortmund break on the counter. Adeyemi goes by Enzo and slots it home. It's a wonderful solo goal.

The right-back strikes it well from 16 yards. It's bouncing but Kobel manages to punch it out.

James goes close again.

Mudryk leaves the ball for Enzo, who hits it with the outside of his boot from outside the box and it goes well wide.

Marco Reus is warming up for Dortmund.

Joao Felix sends a corner in from the left. Kobel comes out to punch it away. 0-0

Brandt places his effort from 20 yards low and into the corner. Kepa reads it well.

It remains goalless in Germany.

The free is curled over the wall and Kobel gets a strong hand to it.

Kobel saves a stunning James free-kick.

Chelsea have a free 25 yards from goal.

Can gets a yellow for taking down James, who has gone on a lung-bursting run.

Can blocks Enzo's effort!

The former Juve man blocks the man with a €120m price tag hovering over his head.

That's good pressure from Chelsea.

Bellingham gets a yellow for a late challenge on Chilwell.

It's 0-0 if you're only just joining us.

The second half is underway!

This guy is a top defender.

End-to-end action

It has been quite fun!

HT: Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Chelsea

It's goalless at the break!

Wolf curls his effort wide after a lay off from Brandt.

Chelsea are on top now, with five minutes to go before the break. It remains 0-0.

Yellow Wall

What a sight that is!

Joao Felix hits the bar!

He shows brilliant feet to make a yard for himself before cracking the woodwork.

Joao Felix has been good again tonight, after scoring for Chelsea against West Ham at the weekend.

He was also good against Fulham on his debut for the club, before he received a red card.

It looks like he's enjoying his free role in the side.

JOAO FELIX blasts it over!

He's all alone, 12 yards out.

Emre Can makes him lift it.

Graham Potter puts his hands on his head.

Joao Felix shoots straight at Kobel.

The flag goes up for offside!

HALLER shoots!

Brandt sIips him through but the striker slams his effort into the side-netting.

That's a fine chance for the home side.

These teams have never been drawn together in Europe before. Tonight is their first meeting.

Wolf's cross comes off Mudryk and goes out for a corner in front of the Yellow Wall. It's a poor corner from Brandt.

Both sides have been relatively comfortable thus far, without creating any real chances of note.

In case you were wondering, tonight’s referee is Spanish official Jesus Gil Manzano. The VAR is fellow Spaniard Alejandro Hernández.

Wolf flies forward on the right but fluffs his shot and it goes out for a goal kick. 0-0

Chelsea swing the free in from the left.

Thiago Silva picks up a yellow for slapping the ball into the net!

Absolutely bizarre! You're not getting away with a 'hand of god' these days.

Chilwell whips the inswinging corner into the box. Yes, it's another corner.

Former Freiburg defender Schlotterbeck heads it out for another corner.

Joao Felix's corner from the other side is punched away by Kobel.

Dortmund go up the other end and win their own corner. Havertz clears the cross with his head. 0-0

Joao Felix the corner but it's headed away. No Chelsea players were near the corner.

Excellent play by Joao Felix to win a corner for Chelsea. They want him to stay on. Haven't they spent enough?

Mudryk swivels to cross on his left from near the corner flag but Chelsea are first to the danger.

Dortmund are without a win in 10 games against English opponents, with eight of them losses.

Chelsea are set up in a mid-block and will look to press Dortmund as they enter the final third.

In better news for Dortmund, striker Sebastien Haller, who was out while undergoing cancer treatment, is back and will lead the line tonight.

Future of Dortmund players

Contract talks between Marco Reus and Borussia Dortmund previously stalled but have once again begun.

In Germany, Bild report that the length of the contract continues to be the main issue as the player would like to continue at the highest level for at least two more years.

Should Reus accept a salary reduction, an extension will be more likely.

Defender Mats Hummels also wants to sign a new deal with the club.

Terzic believes in players

Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic spoke ahead of tonight's game.

"I sense the boys not only believe in reaching the next round but are working hard for it," he said.

"If we continue to consolidate the things that have worked well, we have a good chance of progressing."

Dortmund have won their six games across all competitions in 2023.

Pressure on Potter

With all the new signings at Stamford Bridge, there is immediate pressure on Graham Potter at Chelsea.

Boehly has spent a staggering €609m on players across two transfer windows.

In January alone, he spent €323m.

The squad is absolutely packed with talent and that is also a dilemma for the former Brighton manager. Who does he pick?

Champions League round of 16: away goals rule and what happens if there is a tie?

A year ago, as the 2021/22 Champions League knockout stage got underway, an important change to the rules had been introduced, one which affected something that had determined so many games in previous editions of the tournament.

The decision itself was made in the summer of 2021, when UEFA abolished what was known as ‘the away goals rule’ in all two-legged European ties.

Introduced in 1965, the away goals rule stated that all goals scored by the visiting team in both home and away legs would count as double if the aggregate score ended level.
