Bruce Arena has decided to resign from his position as New England Revolution head coach after initially being suspended for a month for making “inappropriate and insensitive comments”.

New England sit in second place in the Eastern Conference in Major League Soccer with 48 points; 13 wins, 9 draws and 5 losses.

The Revs issued a brief statement via Twitter announcing the move:

The New England Revolution have accepted the resignation of Bruce Arena. We wish Bruce the best and thank him for his contribution to the team. Curt Onalfo will continue as interim Sports Director and Richie Williams will continue as interim Head Coach as the team prepares to close out the 2023 season. Arena joined the club on May 14, 2019, compiling a record of 60-3-42 in MLS during his tenure as head coach”, the club reported through a statement on its social networks.

MLS speaks out

“As a result of the investigation, which confirmed these allegations, should Arena wish to pursue future employment within MLS, he must first submit a petition to the Commissioner.

MLS is committed to safe and welcoming work environments and expects all employees of the League and its clubs to conduct themselves appropriately in the workplace”, confirmed the league via the official MLS website.

In a statement released by the Revolution, Arena was quoted as saying he made the decision to resign “after much soul searching” and acknowledged he had made “mistakes”:

Last season, Bruce Arena celebrated the most victories in MLS history being the first coach to achieve 250 victories throughout his career.
