Manchester United are fresh off Saturday night’s massive win at Stamford Bridge and their presence in next year’s Champions League is looking evermore secure. With a place in Europe’s biggest competition almost a done deal, they are set to keep one of their stars for at least one more season.

Record setting season for Fernandes

It was Bruno Fernandes who played the pass to Matheus Cunha for the one and only goal against Chelsea on Saturday night. It was just one more masterpiece to add to his long list of assists in his Manchester United career, and this one kept the Red Devils on top of Aston Villa who are level with 55 points, and three points clear of fifth placed Liverpool.

The Premier League is guaranteed five spots in the Champions League next year, and United have a 10 point advantage over Chelsea and Brentford in sixth and seventh with just five matches to go. With the UCL all but in the bag, Fernandes is set to stay for another year, at least. The Man U number 10 has previously said, “I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go,” and with a return to the top international competition beckoning, they will be looking to keep the Portuguese wizard who has another year on his contract, plus the option for one more.

At 31 years old, Fernandes is looking like he is in his prime, especially when it comes to setting up goal scoring chances for his teammates. His 18 Premier League goals which is already a club record, and now he is targeting the Premier League record of 20 held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.

Carrick backs Fernandes

The midfielder is set for a summer in North America with the Portuguese national team, and there will be clubs that are sure to try and tempt United into selling him with just one more year on his deal. Fernandes was linked to a move to Saudi Arabia last summer, and you would expect there to be another push this summer, but the Red Devils return to Champions League could stifle that possibility.

The other massive reason for the turnaround at Old Trafford is interim manager Michael Carrick. He has come in and completely changed things around at the Theater of Dreams since taking over for Ruben Amorim in mid January. Since then, he has won 8, drawn 2 and lost 2 matches on the touchline at the club he played for for over a decade.

There is no news on the future of Carrick despite every ex player, pundit and expert seemingly backing the interim manager for the permanent job. Earlier this season, Carrick spoke about Fernandes, “You can always count on him to be there. It’s a really good trait to have. He’s been through ups and downs here but it’s never knocked him. He is there to make the difference.” Carrick added, “We’re delighted to have him. He’s not someone you’d want to lose.”
