With just 24 hours until the European Super Cup final against Atalanta (Wednesday, August 14, 2024, 3 p.m. ET / noon PT.) in Warsaw, French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has withdrawn from training due to an injury. The incident occurred after a collision with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni during the session, forcing Camavinga to leave the field.

A scream echoed across the PGE Narodowy pitch, silencing everyone present and bringing the match to a halt. The sight of Camavinga clutching his bruised left knee caused alarm among the players and coaching staff. Though he lay on the pitch for a few moments, he eventually managed to leave the field on his own.

Who will play for Real Madrid against Atalanta?

Shortly afterward, manager Carlo Ancelotti and his assistants were seen with worried expressions, hoping it was nothing serious. Preliminary tests suggest the injury isn’t severe, but caution prevails within the camp at this point of the season. Camavinga, who has been diagnosed with a sprained knee, will miss the match against Atalanta.

What injury does Camavinga have? How long is he out for?

Camavinga was expected to start tomorrow’s match, but Carlo Ancelotti’s plans have changed. After the scare during tonight’s training session, the lineup is once again in flux. With Camavinga’s injury, which is expected to rule him out for six to seven weeks, Tchouaméni is now a likely candidate to play as the pivot against Atalanta.

The injury is to his left knee, which raises concerns, especially since Camavinga had already suffered a similar injury to his other knee last season. During a training session with the French national team, a tackle by Ousmane Dembélé resulted in a rupture of his external lateral ligament, sidelining him for 50 days.

The good news is that Camavinga managed to leave the field on his own. After lying on the ground for a few moments, he eventually got up and limped off the PGE Narodowy pitch. While the initial analysis suggests it’s not a serious injury, the situation is understandably worrisome.

The images of Carlo Ancelotti and his coaching staff reveal their concerns. If Camavinga is unable to play, Tchouaméni or Modric—who has been tested as a deep-lying midfielder during the tour—will likely join Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham in the lineup.
