Cameroon vs Brazil: The lay of the land

Having already qualified for the Round of 16, Brazil now has the opportunity to claim the top spot in Group G when they take on Cameroon in the last game of their group on Friday night. Following victories over Serbia and Switzerland, the world’s No. 1 team now leads the group with six points. The ‘Seleção’ need just a draw to win the group and quite frankly, could even win the group if they lose depending on the result of Friday’s other match between Serbia and Switzerland. Cameroon on the other hand, currently sit in third place in the group and must defeat Brazil to have any chance of advancing to the knockout stage. Needless to say, it’s going to be a tough task. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET at Lusail Stadium in Al Daayen, Qatar.

Business as usual for Brazil

In Thiago Silva, Brazil have one of the best central defenders in football today. Excellent with both feet and in the air, the Chelsea man reads the game better than most and is quick to close space in his back line every single time. Between both his country and club careers, he’s won a plethora of trophies including a Champions League title with the London outfit most recently. The reason we mention all of this is because with Silva in the middle of the defense, Brazil have not conceded a single goal in Qatar. This is of course before we mention the attack. As we all know, Brazil wrote the book on attacking flair and this edition of the boys in blue and yellow is no different. Though it’s clear they are a different team without talisman Neymar, who won’t face Cameroon due to an ankle injury, they’ve still got a whole lot of attacking options such as Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo and Pacqueta. Add to that their track record under head coach Tite, which is 59 victories, 14 draws and five losses since 2016 and you’ve got yourself a team that’s a serious threat.

Cameroon shouldn’t be afraid

As we mentioned above, when Cameroon meet Brazil, they will do so knowing that they won’t have to face Neymar. Now, while it’s not all about one man, the effect of Brazil’s No. 10 can’t be overstated. Neymar is without doubt one of the best players in the world and by some distance. Having injured ligaments in his right ankle while playing against Serbia in the group opener, the team is now working feverishly to return him to fitness for the latter stages of the tournament. This of course brings us back to the ‘Indomitable Lions’ who have a weapon of their own in the form of Vincent Aboubakar. With Brazil’s major creative/attacking force absent, Cameroon can focus more on imposing their own style on the game, which is where the 30-year-old striker comes into the equation. With 38 goals for the national team, which ranks third all-time, he’s a proven goal scorer. Indeed, as recently as Monday, he entered the game with Cameroon trailing 3-1 to Serbia and inspired a sensational comeback with both a goal and an assist to lift his side to a 3-3 draw.

Cameroon vs Brazil: The Prediction

While we do expect this one to be close, it should in reality be a fairly simple finish to the group stage for Brazil. There will of course be a number of second choice players who get the start, given the fact that Brazil have already qualified. This will of course will allow Cameroon to get a firmer grip on the game but in the end, it’s not likely that the Central African nation will get the three points from this one. Our vote? We’re going with a 2-1 Brazil win.
