Can money from the Apple TV deal attract big name players to MLS in 2023?
Next season all MLS games will be covered by Apple TV with many anticipating that the new deal could see more high profile players moving to the US.
Apple TV will have the MLS broadcasting rights starting next year and many are anticipating that the new deal could be instrumental in attracting more big name, high profile players to move to the States.
According to a LA Galaxy staff member speaking to Los Angeles based AS USA reporter Rodrigo Serrano, the contract with Apple could even open the door to the possibility of a fourth designated player in each team in the league.
What is the designated player rule?
The Designated Player Rule allows clubs to acquire up to three players whose total compensation and acquisition costs exceed the Maximum Salary Budget Charge, with the club bearing financial responsibility for the amount of compensation above each player’s Salary Budget Charge.
Creating space for a fourth DP per club could open the door to players such as Luis Suárez, Radamel Falcao, Lionel Messi and other high profile figures moving to MLS for the 2023 season.
