Canada vs Morocco preview

Canada’s search for a first ever World Cup victory

Canada’s first World Cup venture in 36 years comes to an end against Morocco and they will feel very hard done by not to be in with at least a chance of qualification for the round of 16 after their first two matches. Although they were eventually comfortably beaten by Croatia on matchday two, Canada were very impressive in a 1-0 defeat to Belgium in their opening game, which they should never have lost. Star man Alphonso Davies missed a penalty against the Belgians but scored against the Croats; what will Thursday’s game have in store for him? With the pressure off, coach John Herdman will be looking for his side to go out, enjoy themselves and sign off with a first ever World Cup victory (in two tournaments, Canada have lost five matches out of five so far).

Morocco will qualify for the round of 16 if they avoid defeat to Canada

Morocco have been very impressive in their opening two games and must be confident of qualifying for the round of 16 for the first time since 1986. Four points from their first two outings has them behind Croatia on goal difference but with the Croats and Belgium, the other team in contention to qualify, facing each other on Thursday, the Atlas Lions know that a draw will be good enough to see them through. And if Croatia beat the Belgians, Morocco can even afford to lose on matchday three. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou’s mysteriously disappeared before kick-off against the Red Devils but has been declared fit to play, if called upon.

Canada vs Morocco prediction

With Canada having nothing to play for and everything on the line for Morocco, logic suggests that Walid Regragui’s men should win this one, especially backed by a vociferous and sizeable support, as they have been in their first two matches.
