Buchanan gets to the end line and sends in a cross on the right side that was over everyone and out of danger for Qatar.

Qatar with an early warning sign, it was Laye who looked for Edmilison on the back post but that pass was just a little high of the winger. Good start for Qatar and that will give them confidence moving forward.

For Jesse Marsch, it's Crepeau in goal with Johnston, De Fougerolles, Cornelius and Laryea in the back, with Buchanan, Eustaquio, Kone and Ahmed in the middle and David and Larin up top.

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM VANCOUVER!!!

Vancouver is open for business

We are north of the border again after Canada kicked off their World Cup campaign. They played Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto and today's game will be played in Vancouver. This is one of four group stage games being played here, including the Switzerland and Canada match that could determine the winner of this group. One round of 32 match and one round of 16 match will also be played here.

Odds

Odds after first round of games

The oddsmakers board has seen some movement over the last couple of days. Spain came into the tournament as the slight favroites over France, but their draw against Cape Verde gave them a dose of reality and knocked them out of the favorite spot in the minds of the oddsmakers. According to our friends at Bet365 France are now favorites to win at 5/1, with Spain and England in second and third at 7/1. Argentina are 9/1 while Portugal is 10/1 and Brazil rounds out the top six at 11/1. Neither of these two sides are expected to compete and that’s why their odds are 126/1 (Canada) and 2001/1 (Qatar).

World Cup history: Qatar

Before they hosted the World Cup in 2022 Qatar had never been a part of the World Cup. The country has been around since 1971 but it took more than 50 years to make their debut in the World Cup. Now they are here for the second straight tournament after qualifying for the first time in their history.  Their first World Cup was rough, losing all three group stage games and scoring just one goal. This time around they have a goal and a point already after their draw with Switzerland.

World Cup history: Canada

Believe it or not, this is just the third time the Canadians have ever qualified for the World Cup. I know it's a hockey country and nowadays it's a basketball country but just twice before? They made it in 1986 when the World Cup was held in Mexico and the only other time was in Qatar four years ago. They have never made it past group stages but have a great chance to do so with a win today.

Groups that are all square

We have three different groups which are all deadlocked at a point across the board. The First Group is this Group, Group B. We already know the break down, and even though Qatars and BandH's draws were surprising, I think Belgium’s draw to Egypt was even more surprising. That meant that everyone in Group B is at a point a piece after New Zealand and Iran shared the spoils in the first batch of matches. Group H is the other group that has all four of their teams locked at a point a piece. Spain drew with debutants Cape Verde and Uruguay and Saudi Arabia played to a 1-1 draw.

Group B standings

After all four teams ended the first round of matches level on a point coming into today, it was one of three groups that ended with all four teams locked at a single point a piece. That means things are wide open coming into today. Whoever wins this game will take one step closer to the next stage, but who ever loses won't be out of contention to get to the round of 32.

Star watch: Canada

Alphonso Davies has been the face of this national team for quite some time, but now the younger generation is going to have to take over with their captain sidelined with injury. Oluwaseyi Tanitoluwa and Tajon Buchanan both play for Villarreal in La Liga, but the biggest star on the biggest team outside of Davies is Jonathan David. The 26 year old made the move from Lille to Juventus last summer and scored 6 goals while providing 4 assists in his first season in Serie A and another two goals and an assist in the Champions League.

Star watch Qatar

If you are looking for the star of the Qatar show, look no farther than the man in goal. Mahmud Abunada was the hero of the first match against Switzerland, stopping five shots and exploding on to the World Cup scene before a bit of his thunder was stolen by Cape Verde keeper Vozinha. If Qatar are going to continue to make history, you would have to think it's going to be on the shoulders of their keeper considering goals will come few and far between.

Last match: Qatar

It was a historic day for Qatar last week in Santa Clara, California. The 2022 hosts of the World Cup earned their first point in the country's history of the tournament against a Switzerland side that was ranked considerably higher than the Qataris. Breel Emobolo put the Swiss on the board first with a penalty in the 17th minute. It looked like Qatar was going to lost yet another World Cup match but Mahmud Abunada made five saves to keep his side in the match until stoppage time when Switzerland's  Miro Muheim was credited with an own goal and Qatar earned their first ever point in the World Cup.

Last match: Canada

It was a shaky start for Canada in their first match as World Cup hosts. Nerves might have played a factor for Jesse Marsch's team. Jovo Lukic put Bosnia and Herzegovina up 1-0 in the 21st minute as Canada took a little while to get the ball rolling. Cyle Larin was subbed on in the 76th minute and two minutes later scored the equalizer to share the spoils with the Bosnians.

We are live from Vancouver

Hello everyone and welcome to Vancouver where the Canadian co-hosts of the World Cup don't have much room for error today against Qatar. After a draw in the the opening match up of the group stages against Bosnia and Herzegovina things can get awfully complicated if they don’t secure three points against a heavy underdog in Qatar. A win would almost guarantee them a spot in the round of 32 before their match up with Switzerland in the next round, and they want to book their iced to the next round as soon as they can.
