The United States Women’s National Team will square off against Canada in the Final of the CONCACAF W Championship from Monterrey, Mexico on Monday night.
US and Canada ease to final
Both teams breezed past the group stages and the semis to set up a date between the two unblemished sides in the title match from the Estadio BBVA.
Coach Andonovski’s side is coming off of a convincing win over Costa Rica in the Semifinal on Thursday night. Emily Sonnet opened up the scoring in the 34th minutes for her first international goal ever. Mallory Pugh pushed the match out of reach with a goal right before the stroke of halftime to bury the Costa Rican’s coming out of the break. Ashley Sanchez put the nail in the coffin with a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to secure the 3-0 semifinal win. Before the US team earned a perfect nine of nine points in the group stages, beating Haiti 3-0, Jamaica 5-0 and Mexico 1-0.
Canada has had a very similar path to the final, scoring 9 goals in the group stages, without conceding a goal. After securing nine points in the three group stage matches, the Canadians met Jamaica in the Semis. Jessie Fleming scored the opener in the 18th minute, and then Allysha Chapman doubled the advantage with the 2-0 in the 64th. Adriana Leon added the 3-0 in the 76th minute in a night where Canada peppered 33 shots, and 11 on target against the Reggae Girlz.
The top two teams from each group locked up their ticket to World Cup 2023 next year in New Zealand and Australia. Now the two North American powerhouses will square off a not just the CONCACAF W Championship title, but also for an automatic bid to the Olympics in 2024.
