The Leagues Cup 2023 clash between Liga MX side Chivas and FC Cincinnati of the MLS was suspended after an hour of play due to “inclement weather”, with competition bosses taking more than three-and-a-half hours to make a decision as to how and when the match would be completed.

What caused Guadalajara vs FC Cincinatti to be postponed?

The fixture kicked off at 8:00 p.m. ET at TQL Stadium in Ohio, with The Orange and Blue immediately racing into a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace inside eight minutes from USMNT attacker Brandon Vázquez.

The score remained that way until the 60-minute mark, when play was stopped due to lightning in the area, with fans in certain sections of the stadium forced to move as a safety precaution. A severe thunderstorm warning meant the match was unable to resume and left tournament organisers with a decision to make…which they took their time in doing so.

Supporters and players were left hanging around wondering what was going on, while the Leagues Cup received plenty of criticism online for a perceived lack of communication.

Leagues Cup statement: when will Chivas vs FC Cincinnati resume?

A decision was finally made to postpone the match at around 1:00 am ET, with the Leagues Cup announcing in an official statement that the final 30 minutes would be played on Friday at 2:00 p.m ET.

“Thursday night’s Leagues Cup match between FC Cincinnati and Chivas Guadalajara has been postponed to Friday at 2 pm ET due to inclement weather.

The MLS side had a 2-0 advantage before the game was stopped with 30 minutes left to play after a lightning-related weather delay.

The match will resume from the time at which it went into a delay.

An uphill battle for Chivas

While some Chivas fans joked that the match should be replayed in full, their team will instead face an uphill battle to take something from the game. Not only will they restart 2-0 down, but they will also have to play the last 30 minutes with 10 men after Gilberto Sepúlveda was sent off just before half time.
