Club América got their pre-season off to a winning start by defeating second-tier Cancún FC 2-0 in their first friendly match ahead of the Clausura 2023.

América head coach Fernando Ortíz took the opportunity to experiment at Cancún’s Estadio Andrés Quintana Roo, in a game that was notable for the presence of Leonardo Suárez. Following his return from a loan spell with Santos Laguna, the Argentine’s future with Las Águilas remains up in the air.

Valdés, Rodríguez get the goals in Cancún

Diego Váldes and Jonathan ‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez were the scorers of the goals for América, who saw off their hosts with the minimum of fuss. In the first half, Váldes netted the opener with a good header after a cross by Suárez.

In a second half that brought multiple substitutions, Rodríguez grabbed América’s in the final minutes.

New signing Reyes makes first América appearance

Ortiz also took the opportunity to give Israel Reyes his first run-out as an Americanista. Signed from Puebla, the Mexico international is the 13-time league champions’ only close-season signing so far.

Meanwhile, there was bad news for América in the shape of an injury to Diego Váldes, who was forced off after a collision with an opponent. The attacker will undergo medical tests to determine the severity of the injury.

América’s next preseason clash will see them face Necaxa on 15 December, before further warm-up fixtures against Toluca, Pumas and Cruz Azul.
