The much-anticipated meeting between Tigres and Club América on matchday 17 of the Liga MX Apertura 2023 is fast approaching, with the duo among the favourites to clinch the title in a few weeks’ time. However, Las Águilas have had by far the upper hand in recent meetings between the teams, which may bode well for Saturday’s clash and the end-of-season liguilla.

The current tournament’s “super leaders” have won each of their last eight fixtures against Los Auriazules, which is unsurprisingly their best run of results against their upcoming opponents. Tigres haven’t beaten América for almost four years, with their last victory coming on 28 November 2019.

Tiges vs Club América: last five meetings

11 April 2021, Clausura 2021 - Tigres 1-3 América: A game to forget for the hosts, who had two players sent off in a 3-1 defeat, with Roger Martínez scoring twice for Las Águilas. And it was, in fact, a tournament to forget for the men from Nuevo León, who were beaten at the repechaje/reclassification stage.

24 October 2021, Apertura 2021 - América 1-0 Tigres: Ame were the dominant team in the league phase but were beaten to the title by Atlas. Henry Martín’s second-half goal was enough to settle the clash at Estadio Azteca.

4 April 2022, Clausura 2022 - Tigres 0-2 América: more red card misery for Tigres as Guido Pizarro was sent off late on, just before André-Pierre Gignac sealed three points for his team. Nevertheless, Los Auriazules went on to finish above Las Águilas, but Atlas were again crowned champions.

4 September 2022, Apertura 2022 - América 2-1 Tigres: Alex Zendejas scored the winner on the stroke of half time after the teams had traded early goals. Neither side reached the liguilla final, which was won by Pachuca.

12 March 2023, Clausura 2023 - Tigres 0-2 América: Tigres would go on to clinch their first Liga MX title in four years but lost at home to Ame, who finished five places ahead of them in the league.

What’s at stake in Saturday’s game between Tigres and América?

América are already assured of ending the league phrase in first position but have the chance to set a new points record in a 17-game Liga MX tournament. Tigres have also sealed their place in the playoffs, with Saturday’s result set to decide whether they finish second, third or fourth, with Monterrey currently three points ahead of them and Chivas two behind.
