Update:

Midfielder Alexis Gutiérrez has officially parted ways with Cruz Azul to join the most decorated club in Mexican soccer history - Club América.

The 25-year-old had seen his role diminish significantly at Cruz Azul, prompting him to seek a fresh start. Now, he faces the challenge of winning over a demanding América fanbase, many of whom have voiced skepticism about his arrival. Changing their minds will be one of his first major tasks.

According to TUDN, América have paid a transfer fee of just under $4 million for Gutiérrez, who has signed a four-year deal with Las Águilas.

Gutiérrez’s career so far

A product of Chivas Guadalajara’s youth academy, Gutiérrez made the move to Cruz Azul in 2019 and debuted under then-manager Pedro Caixinha.

Over the course of 11 tournaments, he made 103 appearances in the sky-blue jersey and helped the team capture several major honors:

  • Liga MX Clausura 2021
  • 2020/21 Campeón de Campeones
  • 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup

Reshaping América’s roster

Time is of the essence for América head coach André Jardine, whose squad has reached the final in each of the last four Liga MX tournaments - a remarkable run that has taken its toll physically. As the club prepares for a packed calendar, América has already confirmed the departures of Walter Portales, Miguel Ramírez, Esteban Lozano, Jonathan Estrada and Diego Valdés.

Adding to the uncertainty is the future of Dutch winger Javairô Dilrosun, who was loaned to Los Angeles FC for the Club World Cup in the U.S., where the Black and Gold’s campaign came to an end on Tuesday.

According to the journalist Julio Ibáñez, Dilrosun could be part of a deal that would send him and a reported $12 million to $13 million to LAFC in exchange for Gabonese forward Denis Bouanga.

Currently, América’s players are in Cancún for preseason training. They’re scheduled to play a friendly this Friday against second-tier Mexican club Cancún FC - likely their only warm-up match before kicking off their Apertura 2025 campaign with a visit to FC Juárez on Friday, July 11.
