Striker Gonzalo Mastriani could be added to Cruz Azul’s squad as La Máquina bid to turn around their fortunes in the Liga MX’s Apertura 2023 tournament.

The media outlet ESPN says club chiefs are eager to sign the 30-year-old from Brazilian Série A side América Mineiro.

Mastriani already acquainted with Mexican game

Mastriani already has experience of Mexican soccer, having previously played for Tampico Madero and Alebrijes de Oaxaca in the second-tier Liga Expansión.

The Uruguayan’s previous clubs also include Italian outfits Parma and Crotone.

In addition to Mastriani, Cruz Azul are said to be looking at Istanbul Basaksehir forward João Figueiredo as a potential attacking option.

Cruz Azul well off pace in Apertura 2023

Cruz Azul, who are nine-time Mexican champions, lie second bottom in the Apertura 2023 regular-season standings, having won just one of their first seven games of the campaign. They sit seven points adrift of the automatic playoff qualification spots.

The Mexico City side also endured disappointment in this summer’s Leagues Cup, suffering a last-32 defeat to MLS franchise Charlotte.

The club’s poor domestic form, coupled with their Leagues Cup elimination, saw head coach Ricardo Ferretti sacked last month after just five months in charge.

Ferretti was replaced by interim boss Joaquín Moreno.
