Real Sociedad got off to the best possible start in their Copa del Rey final against Atlético Madrid, scoring in the very first attack of the game. Ander Barrenetxea headed in Gonçalo Guedes’ cross after only 14 seconds.

The goal is now comfortably the fastest ever in a Copa del Rey final, easily beating Raúl Tamudo’s 87-second effort for Espanyol against Real Zaragoza in 2006.

Barrenetxea’s goal, however, is not the fastest in Spanish soccer history. That accolade goes to Real Valladolid’s Joseba Llorente, who took just 7.22 seconds to score against Espanyol in a LaLiga game during the 2007-08 season.

Real Sociedad win fourth Copa del Rey on penalties

Real Sociedad, coached by American Pellegrino Matarazzo, went on to win the Copa del Rey for just the fourth time in their history, prevailing in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw.

Ademola Lookman canceled out Barrenetxea’s early goal, while Julián Álvarez forced extra time after Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty had put La Real back ahead.

Goalkeeper Unai Marrero saved spot-kicks from Alexander Sorloth and Julián Álvarez, allowing Pablo Marín to score the winning penalty.
