Could Jaime Lozano replace Rafael Puente del Río as Pumas boss?

With his Pumas side on a five-game winless run, Puente del Río’s position is under threat - and Lozano is reportedly in line to take over at the Liga MX club.

Pumas’ Clausura 2023 tournament is going from bad to worse. The team’s latest defeat, at the hands of Chivas Guadalajara, has left Rafael Puente del Río’s side down in 11th in the regular-season standings - and Los Auriazules’ board is reportedly eyeing up a series of candidates to take over as head coach.

Lozano in, Puente del Río out?

According to Mexican radio station W Radio, Jaime Lozano is waiting in the wings to take charge at the seven-time domestic champions if they opt to make a change in the dugout.

Pumas boss on short-term contract

When Puente del Río was unveiled as Pumas boss in October, it was revealed that he had signed a contract lasting only six months, with the option of extending the deal to cover the calendar year’s second Liga MX tournament, the Apertura 2023.

Given the terms on offer at the time, former Pumas player Lozano was among the coaches who passed up the chance to take the reins at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Ricardo Ferretti and Guillermo Vázquez Jr also ruled themselves out of the running for the job.

Puente del Río faces do-or-die Mazatlán clash

On matchday 9 of the Clausura 2023 on Friday, Pumas will visit the worst team in the Liga MX, Mazatlán FC. After five games without a win, another negative result for the men from the capital could well seal Puente del Río’s fate.
