Update:
Croatia vs. Canada, Qatar 2022, 27/11/2022
AS English

Both national teams await their first victory and first goals at this year’s World Cup. In the first round, ‘Vatreni’ played a goalless draw against Morocco, while Canada recorded a minimal defeat against Belgium (1-0).

World Cup news:

Despite an excellent season in the League of Nations, where they reached the final four, few gave Croatia a chance to achieve a similar result as at the 2018 World Cup in Russia (second place), and already after the first round, it was apparent to see why.

Croatia vs. Canada preview

Croatia

Croatia should be much more satisfied with the draw against Morocco, given that they had only five shots on the opponent’s goal in the entire game, where most of the eyes were on Dejan Lovren and Joško Guardiola to defend our goal against the onslaught of the Moroccans.

The Croatian coach, Zlatko Dalić, admitted that his team “lacked courage” in the first game against Morocco. Still, even with that point, they could pass the group because they are currently in second place in Group F, surpassing third-placed Morocco in fair play points for now. If they do not win against Canada, the chances of going to the knockout phase of the World Cup in Qatar will be less and less.

Canada

Alphonso Davies missed an excellent opportunity to increase their hopes of advancing to the group after the first round of the World Cup and on the way to becoming a hero of his nation when Thibaut Courtois saved his penalty in the 10th minute of the match.

Belgium was solid, though, and Michy Batshuayi’s long ball ended with the Fenerbahce forward putting it under the crossbar just before the end of the half. Despite this, the Canadians showed a great game against one of Belgium’s best generations, and even though they are at the very bottom of the table with this defeat, they still have a great chance to pass the group.

Croatia vs. Canada prediction

In the first match of the World Cup group stage, Canada indeed showed a greater desire to attack than Croatia.

Still, all the missed opportunities that the Canadians had against Belgium could backfire in this match.

Who is the referee

Andres Matonte, one of nine South American referees in the Qatar World Cup, will be in charge of the Croatia vs. Canada match.

Born in 1988, Matonte made his debut at just 20, refereeing in the Uruguayan Championship. Since 2019, he has been an official FIFA referee, taking charge of some important matches.
