Cruz Azul face huge challenge before end of Liga MX season

MÉXICOUpdate:
Cruz Azul has a complicated path to qualify for the league
MIGUEL SIERRAEFE

Cruz Azul have suffered yet another defeat in the Apertura 2023 and their qualification for the final phase of the season looks increasingly unlikely.

La Máquina lost 2-1 to Tigres at the Estadio Universitario, leaving them in second last place in the overall standings with 11 points, just above Puebla.

Los Cementeros will be looking to pull off the miracle of reaching the final phase of the season in their remaining matches against León, FC Juárez, Chivas and Puebla.

When was the last time Cruz Azul failed to qualify for Liguilla?

If Cruz Azul fail to make it to the finals, they will break a streak of four consecutive years of qualifying for that stage of the season.

It was in the Apertura 2019 when Cruz Azul last missed out on the finals. In that tournament, Portuguese coach Pedro Caixinha was replaced by Uruguayan Robert Dante Siboldi.

Los Cementeros finished the regular phase with 23 points from 18 games played, with five wins, eight draws and five defeats.

It’s worth remembering that, at that time, only the top eight teams in the overall standings qualified for the final phase.
