De Bruyne provides curious Messi solution
AS has been able to confirm that Manchester City’s Belgian star has preference for his future.

Kevin De Bruyne’s expected farewell at the end of the season has sent shockwaves through the football world – especially in the more exotic leagues. According to the Daily Mail and confirmed by AS, the Belgian maestro is eyeing a move to MLS, with several clubs already reaching out to his camp.
So far, there are no formal offers on the table, largely due to the financial implications of such a high-profile signing. That’s why MLS commissioner Don Garber is working on a Messi-style plan – involving third-party partnerships to help cover De Bruyne’s wages.

Is De Bruyne moving to the MLS?
The idea is clear: De Bruyne would become the second-highest paid player in U.S. soccer, undoubtedly taking up a Designated Player (DP) slot. Sources close to the league suggest he could earn around $15 million per season, a staggering amount, though still short of Lionel Messi’s reported $20 million+.
External sponsors like Adidas and Apple are being considered to help finance the deal, and there’s also talk of naming De Bruyne an ambassador ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America.
The league sees De Bruyne as its next global face. His arrival would be more than a coup – it would strengthen MLS’s standing against other emerging markets, particularly Saudi Arabia, and serve as a massive brand boost for Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s agency that represents the Belgian and would benefit from having a superstar under its umbrella on U.S. soil.
Inter Miami out of the raceDespite initial speculation linking Inter Miami to the move, the reality is very different. The Herons’ finances don’t currently support such a signing, even with an open DP slot. Though they were able to stabilize their books in January, the margin isn’t wide enough for a deal of this magnitude.

Miami’s money musings
Instead, Miami may pivot toward a more affordable target – Ángel Di María is reportedly a top alternative.
San Diego has also ruled itself out. As previously reported, the club has no plans to deviate from its long-term vision. Despite having the resources, they’re only using two of their three DP slots this season (Anders Dreyer and Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano), and intend to save the third for next year.
As of now, New York City FC – part of the City Football Group – is the clear favorite to land De Bruyne. The connection with Manchester City and the infrastructure in place make NYCFC the most logical and likely destinationfor MLS’s next marquee signing.
