Despite Leagues Cup progress, Querétaro squad the cheapest in Liga MX

Liga MX is quickly running out of participants in the Leagues Cup 2023, after continuously weak showings against MLS teams are highlighting the difference in level between the two leagues. Both Toluca and América crashed out on penalties to MLS sides meaning that Querétaro and Monterrey are the only teams from the south of the border left in the competition.

Monterrey spent big on new signing, Sergio Canales, but their Mexican league partners, Querétaro, have the cheapest squad in the entire league, with a value of just $20 million, just a quarter of what Club América are said to be worth.

Quéretaro’s recent problems

The positive history of Querétaro in Leagues Cup has another side to it given the fact that there were payment problems earlier in the year. In fact, the players were tired of not getting their wages and threatened to strike until payments were made.

Now, in the Leagues Cup final 8, Liga MX has only 2 Mexican representatives who share little between them in terms of economics. Rayados spent a huge sum of money to bring in one of LaLiga’s biggest stars at around half of the worth of the rest of the squad while Querétaro bet on Mauro Gerk and a series of loans from the Liga de Expansión. Their road in the Leagues Cup is difficult, as they have to get past the Philadelphia Union before a potential tie against Leo Messi awaits.
