Moroccans celebrate in major Spanish cities after victory over Spain; police prevent disturbances

Festivities take over Spanish streets after Morocco eliminates Spain in the World Cup; police stay vigilant

Update:

Despite the fact that Moroccan citizens celebrated happily in most places in Spain, the emblematic Madrid square, Sol, witnessed short disturbances.

The National Police has prepared extensive security to avoid altercations in the streets after Spain was eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar.

Security forces in cities like El Ejido (Almería), where there are a total of 16,751 Moroccans registered with a population of 84,000 residents, have been more vigilant. And also in Sol and Callao, the center of Madrid, where Spaniards with Moroccan roots have also come to celebrate the victory.

In Madrid, between 3,000 and 4,000 people gathered in ‘Plaza de Callao’ to celebrate Morocco’s victory and, although surrounded by riot police, they celebrated it peacefully by heading towards Puerta del Sol. Celebratory songs, Moroccan flags, and a festive atmosphere took the city center by storm.

In ‘Sol’, however, police did intervene shortly, to break off whatever seemed like a tense moment, as shown In the video above. There is no clear sight of any real danger, and there has been no information on the matter.

Moroccans continue to take the streets of Spain with chants and celebrations, in peace.
