Liverpool are close to a deal to bring RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai to Anfield as the club continues its summer rebuild.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were found severely lacking in 2022/23 and failed to qualify for the Champions League. Midfield has been identified as a key area of focus this summer and the 22-year-old has emerged as a target.

Szoboszlai has impressed for RB Leipzig in recent years and has just finished a strong season in the Bundesliga. The energetic midfielder contributed six goals and eight assists in the German top flight.

He has been the subject of interest from a number of top clubs but it looks like Liverpool are now in pole position. On Thursday the player’s representatives met with Liverpool and the Premier League club were encouraged by his eagerness for a transfer.

Dominik Szoboszlai release clause

Liverpool’s interest in the Hungarian midfielder is nothing new but their pursuit of him has intensified in the past 24 hours. That is in part due to the reported existence of a release clause that expires at the end of June.

Numerous outlets report that he has a release clause of €70 million, but that option ends after Friday 30 June. If Liverpool’s bid reaches that valuation then Leipzig will have no choice but to let Szoboszlai leave.

Dominik Szoboszlai best position

Primarily a central midfielder, Szoboszlai’s varied talents have seen him play in a number of roles for club and country. He is most naturally a rangy box-to-box midfielder, with the energy to get up and down the pitch.

For Leipzig he has also been utilised as a winger on occasion and is able to fulfil the high-pressing demands of the Bundesliga. For the Hungarian national team he is the undoubted talisman, playing as an advanced number ten with the freedom to roam around.

European football expert Andy Brassell has described Szoboszlai as a “Premier League ready” option for Liverpool.

“He’s an incredible athlete, great technique, loves a shot from outside the box, can score goals and create goals,” he added.
