A late winner from Franck Kessie established a 12-point gap at the top for La Liga leaders Barcelona, all but ending Real Madrid’s hopes of reeling in their old rivals.

The Spanish league campaign is put on hold after Sunday’s El Clásico exploits for an international break, but Barça have put themselves within touching distance of a first league title since 2018/19.

Xavi Hernández’s side are 12 points clear of rivals Madrid with 12 games remaining, meaning that it would need an unprecedented shift to usurp them at the top. Now, with Barcelona already out of European competition, they will focus on asserting their domestic dominance.

Barcelona could beat winning margin record

In 2012/13, exactly a decade ago, Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona side broke the La Liga record for the largest points margin between the first- and second-placed teams. They became just the second side in Spanish league history to reach the 100-point mark, leaving them 15 ahead of rivals Real Madrid.

This season both Barça and Madrid have played 26 games, with the Catalans enjoying a 12-point lead. If they both continue at the same pace for the remaining dozen fixtures, Barcelona’s lead would stretch to 17 points by the end of the season.

Madrid have been drawn against Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and, with league success now out of the question, may focus their attentions on continental competition instead. If Xavi’s side can continue their relentless pace in the league, they could have a La Liga record on their hands.

What other records could Barcelona break this season?

Barça’s first 26 games returned 22 wins, two draws and two defeats. They would need to win ten of their remaining 12 games to break the record for most wins in a season, which is currently set at 32.

However the La Liga points record could be achieveable. If they continue picking up points at their current rate, they would secure around 99 points by the end of the campaign. The La Liga record, set by Madrid in 2011/12 and then equalled by Barça the following year, is 100, meaning that the Camp Nou side is certainly within reach.

Most likely is the La Liga record for fewest goals conceded. Even after conceding to Madrid on Sunday evening, Barça have still conceded just nine times in 26 league games this season. The current record figure is 18, held jointly by Deportivo La Coruña (1993-1994) and Atlético Madrid (2015-2016).
