Europe dream still on the cards for Luis Chávez at 35
The Pachuca midfielder admitted that he felt a little frustrated after a proposed move to Europe in the last transfer window fell through.
One of the intriguing pleasant revelations in Mexican soccer in recent months was undoubtedly Luis Chávez. The Pachuca midfielder shone at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and there was some speculation that he could make the leap to Europe in the last transfer window, something that unfortunately did not happen.
In spite of that, the Mexican midfielder has not lost hope of making the move to one of Europe’s big leagues in the near future, as he revealed to ESPN: “I might be 35, but my priority is to look for a team outside of Mexico. The possibility of being able to move to Europe and play there is is what excites you the most,” he said.
The 35-year-old recalled his disappointment when he found out that a deal had fallen through during the January window. “I wasn’t very calm about at the beginning. To be honest, it bothered me a bit, but that only lasted a day or two and then I understood it and accepted it (not going to Europe). In the end, God already has something prepared for you and I was able to understand that. So I relaxed and I started working here with Pachuca. Because that’s what will help me to be where I want to be,” Chávez reasoned.
Focused on the present
Chávez, who joined Pachuca from Tijuana in July 2019 states that he has not completely given up on his dream of playing in Europe and says he will try to improve certain aspects of his game to give himself a better chance. “As time goes by, you start proposing different things, better things and then I improve. For example, in the past, when I was just starting out, I wasn’t a regular in the starting XI but now I am,” he explained.
There was some good news for the player on Thursday when CONCACAF announced that his stunning free-kick for Mexico against Saudi Arabia the the Qatar World Cup is one of the nominations for Goal of the Year.
“Now, my aim is to play for the national team [this summer in the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup] and then after that, I want to go to Europe. Those kinds of things motivate me to keep working. Whether it turns out for me or not, it can help me to improve”, he concluded. Chávez’s dream could become a reality in a few months’ time - Feyenoord are reported to be interested in signing him if Orkun Kökçü leaves in the summer window.
