Wrexham on brink of third consecutive promotion, how far can Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney take the team?
With just a handful of games left to play in the League One season, the Welsh side are in a commanding position to secure promotion.

November 20 (2020) is a key date etched in the minds of all fans of Wrexham A.F.C.
This was the day that the sale of the Welsh football was confirmed with Hollywood duo of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney the new owners.

At the time, the club was languishing in the English National League or fifth tier of the pyramid system with growing debts crippling the club’s future.
Their celebrity status of the duo immediately drew in a massive audience that otherwise might not have known about the club with the launch of the “Welcome to Wrexham” documentary which showcased the trials and tribulations as the pair started to become more and more invested (financially and emotionally) with the club from the working class town in the north of Wales.
Matters on the pitch also helped and despite falling at the final hurdle in their first season in charge, under the guidance of coach Phil Parkinson and boosted with a sizeable playing budget, Wrexham secured two back-to-back promotions which saw them move to their current position in England’s League one (third tier).
Championship bound?
A win this weekend away to Exeter (0-2) sees Wrexham consolidate their position in second place in the table. They sit 9 points behind Birmingham City (co-owned by Tom Brady) and three ahead of closest pursuer Wycombe.

The top two teams automatically are promoted to the Championship (second tier) with teams finishing in 3rd-6th place competing for a final promotion place via a play-off system.
With the exception of a series of lower league English sides (Chester City, FC United), no club in the top echelons of the English game has ever secured three back-to-back promotions.

How long can this Hollywood fairytale last for Wrexham is a pertinent question as they look to reach the promised land of the Premier League. It’s been stated by many experts that, the Reynolds and McElhenney may need additional external funding given the highly financial competitive nature of the Championship with so many clubs looking to secure a place in the promised land that is the English Premier League.
In the meantime, with seven games to play for the Red Dragons this season, Wrexham fans continue to dream big and hark back to that November day just five years ago when the fate of their football club changed forever.
