Flashback to March 14, 2015: The last time Burnley beat Man City | Final score, goal and lineups
Manchester City have a chance to take the lead in the Premier League tonight from Turf Moor as Pep Guardiola’s side take on Burnley from Turf Moor.
Manchester City can take the lead from Arsenal tonight from Turf Moor, as Pep Guardiola’s men take face a Burnley side that desperately close to getting relegated. On paper it would seem like an easy win, and recent history would suggest the same.
Pep yet to lost to Burnley
Manchester City have gone 19 matches without losing to Burnley, winning 18 of those matches. The one draw came in February of 2018 but since then they have beaten the Clarets in each of the last 14 matches.
The last loss City suffered at the hands of Burnley was back in March of 2015, before Pep Guardiola took charge on the touchlines at the Etihad. It was a 1-0 loss for Manuel Pellegrini’s men, and it was a costly one for City who were in a title race with Chelsea and Arsenal.
The Chilean manger had an XI that will take you right down memory lane when you read the names on the list. Joe Hart was in goal, with Pablo Zabaleta, Vincent Kompany, Martin Demichelis and Gael Clichy in the back. David Silva, Fernandinho, Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas patrolled the middle with Kun Aguero and Eden Dzeko up top.
Boyd’s goal still lives on at Turf Moor
The stacked XI was held scoreless against Sean Dyche’s Burnley side that were fighting against relegation that year. Tom Heaton was in goal, with a young Kieran Trippier, Michael Duff, Jason Shackell and Ben Mee in the back. Ashley Barnes, David Jones, Scott Arfield and George Boyd were in the midfield, and Sam Vokes and Danny Igns were up top for the Clarets.
A goal from George Boyd was enough to give Burnley a shocking three points after a Trippier free kick was cleared out of the area, right on to the boot of Boyd who hit it off the half volley in the 61st minute. City had 71% of the possession had 21 shots, to Burnley’s 10 and 5 on target while Dyche’s men had four on Hart’s frame. City went on to lose the league title to Chelsea while Burnley did eventually get relegated despite the massive upset.
It´s been over a decade since Burnley have beaten Manchester City, and there is plenty on the line for both teams again tonight. A loss could see the Clarets relegated depending on what West Ham do against Everton over the weekend. City have a chance to take the lead at the top of the table with a win that would level them with Arsenal at 70 points. If they win by two goals or more, they would hold the goal differential advantage on the Gunners and go to bed as leaders of the Premier League tonight.
