Florentino’s new‑look Real Madrid takes shape with Konaté, Mourinho — and Gvardiol pushing for a move
The City defender, in addition to playing center back, can play as a left back, a position Madrid seeks to reinforce.

Florentino Pérez’s vision for the next Real Madrid is already in motion. The presidential candidate — and heavy favorite to remain in charge — has two major additions locked in, according to AS: Ibrahima Konaté and José Mourinho. Another deal moving quickly is Denzel Dumfries, and Nico Paz is set for a guaranteed return.
If Pérez wins Sunday’s election, his priority is crystal clear: rebuild the defense after a season defined by injuries and inconsistency.
Gvardiol Still in Play — Even With Konaté Signed
As AS previously reported, Josko Gvardiol has offered himself to Real Madrid. And despite Konaté’s arrival, the Croatian defender remains very much alive as an option if Pérez secures another term.
With David Alaba out, Éder Militão sidelined until late October or early November, Antonio Rüdiger battling recurring physical issues, and Asensio’s future unclear, Madrid knows one signing won’t be enough. That’s where Gvardiol fits in.
The club has admired him since his RB Leipzig days, especially his versatility — he can play both center back and left back, a valuable 2‑for‑1. With Fran García likely to leave this summer and Ferland Mendy’s long‑term fitness still a question, Gvardiol could cover both roles seamlessly.
The complication: Manchester City won’t make it easy
The obstacle is obvious: Manchester City. After Pep Guardiola’s departure, the club is determined not to show weakness. Croatian outlet Jutarnji list reports City will try to keep Gvardiol by offering a new contract with a higher salary.
But the player’s preference is clear — he wants Real Madrid. And Madrid is listening.
Still, Pérez won’t overspend. City paid roughly $97 million for Gvardiol in 2023, and with two years left on his deal, the price won’t drop much. Madrid will push, but they won’t “go crazy” or jeopardize the club’s finances. City typically doesn’t force unhappy players to stay, so Gvardiol’s desire could influence the outcome.

Gvardiol’s season: strong start, painful finish
Before a tibia fracture sidelined him for 28 matches, Gvardiol played 25 games, scoring two goals and providing five assists. Guardiola used him regularly at both center back and left back — and the Croatian was one of the coach’s personal requests. With Guardiola gone, Gvardiol is ready for a new chapter.
Mourinho’s Madrid Will Look Very Different
If Pérez wins, expect a summer full of movement. The midfield will also get reinforcements — Nico Paz is returning, but he won’t be the only addition.
Mourinho wants his squad completed as early as possible, but negotiations like Gvardiol’s will take time and likely won’t be resolved before the World Cup.
Gvardiol wants Madrid. Madrid values him. Now it’s up to City — and the election.
