Update:

Michael Olise will have more than Morocco to think about when France take to the field in their 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal.

Why is Olise at risk of missing the semifinal?

The winger goes into the last-eight clash carrying a yellow card, meaning another booking would rule him out of a potential semifinal should France progress. It is an added complication for Didier Deschamps, who will hope one of his most dangerous attacking players can make the difference without falling foul of the Argentine referees.

Olise picked up his caution during France’s round-of-16 victory over Paraguay, leaving him walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of this massive clash.

Which other French players are at risk?

Despite that risk, there is little doubt over his importance. His creativity, ability to beat defenders and composure in the final third have made him a key figure in France’s run to the quarterfinals, and Deschamps will be reluctant to alter his approach because of the suspension threat.

Olise is not the only French player at risk. Midfielder Manu Koné is also one yellow card away from a ban, although the spotlight inevitably falls on the winger given his influence in the final third.

What Morocco players are at risk?

Morocco also has several players who must avoid another caution. Achraf Hakimi, Issa Diop, Redouane Halhal and Bilal El Khannouss would all miss a semifinal if they are booked and Morocco advances.

With a place in the last four at stake, France’s priority is beating Morocco. But for Olise, there is another objective too: making sure his World Cup journey doesn’t end with a suspension just as the tournament reaches its decisive stage.

Then again, imagine him starting the final 100% fresh. Scary.
