The panorama in this season’s Champions League will start to look a little clearer as we reach the midway point of the group stage. And particularly in Group A with a direct clash between the teams occupying the top two places - Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.
Victory for Thomas Tüchel’s side would practically ensure their place in the next round - depending on what happens between Manchester United and Copenhagen. However, hosts Galatasaray could also knock the Germans off top spot and up the stakes for when both teams meet again in Munich on matchday 4.
As it stands, Bayern top the group with six points, Galatasaray are just behind on four points, Copenhagen have one point and United are yet to get off the mark.

Gala cruising with new star recruits
Okan Buruk can feel pleased with how his team has been performing on both fronts this season. Domestically, Gala are neck and neck with Fenerbahçe near the top of Süper Lig having dropped just a couple of points in the first eight games. Likewise in Europe, the Turks remain unbeaten with two memorable performances to date. They showed great character to claw their way back into the opening group game against Copenhagen - goals from Sacha Boey and Tête enabled them to level the score in the last five minutes. Buruk’s troops followed that up with a 3-4 win over Manchester United - Galatasaray’s first ever victory at Old Trafford.
Two of the club’s key summer signings Mauro Icardi and Wilfred Zaha have taken no time at all to settle in - which is clearly reflected in their figures. Galatasaray have goal scorers throughout the squad and are solid at the back although Bayern will undoubtedly give them their toughest test in this game and the following one at the Allianz.

At +500 (9/2), the 2020 winners are, along with Man City, the big favorites to win this season’s tournament. They top Group A, remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga and have been scoring freely since the campaign began. The only downside has been a spate of injuries which has affected the team’s early momentum. Serge Gnabry only recently returned to training after undergoing surgery on a fracture forearm; another long-term casualty is Joshua Kimmich who won’t appear again until the New Year while he recovers from a torn meniscus; centre-back Dayot Upamecano is also facing a long layoff with a hamstring tear and left-back Raphaël Guerreiro has yet to complete a full game this season - he’s been struggling to overcome a calf muscle issue and picked up a hamstring injury just before the international break.

It’s bizarre to think that these two clubs have only crossed paths once in European competition and that was 50 years ago.
