Gio Reyna has a new club: These are the teams that shaped the USMNT star before RC Strasbourg
Gio Reyna is heading to France after spending most of his career in Germany. On Monday, RC Strasbourg made a deal to bring the USMNT midfield to Ligue 1.
The USMNT was one of the most watched teams in this summer’s World Cup. Mauricio Pochettino’s men had their run cut short in the round of 16, but there was still time for Gio Reyna to make his mark in the transfer market.

The midfielder is on the move after a productive World Cup in which he played a substitute role for “Poch”, featuring in every game and scoring a goal against Paraguay. Now he is making a move at the club level after spending last season with Borussia Monchengladbach.
Reports over the weekend linked him to a move to Ligue 1, and on Monday those reports were confirmed. RC Strasbourg paid the German side €3 million for the services of the midfielder, who is set to sign a five year deal with the French side.
This comes one year after Reyna was sold to Borussia Monchengladbach from long time club Borussia Dortmund. Gio, the son of US national player Claudio Reyna, spent time at New York City FC’s academy team before making the move abroad.
Change of air for Reyna
He joined Borussia Dortmund as a teenager, playing a handful of matches with the U-19s before making his debut with the German powerhouse in 2020. For the first few years in Dortmund he was a key figure in the midfield, but he was loaned to Nottingham Forest at the for the second half of the 2023/2024 season.
He would return to Dortmund after the loan spell and play in just 16 Bundesliga matches before the club decided to part ways with the American. He spent one season at Monchengladbach and scored just one goal last season, before Strasbourg came calling.
Reyna, still just 23 years old, will embark on his new Ligue 1 adventure coming off a successful World Cup campaign with the USMNT. Strasbourg, which is the sister club of Chelsea, is coming off of a season in which they finished eighth, just missing out on European play this upcoming season.
