Vinicius returns to Real Madrid with no signs of contract drama

Vinicius Jr. showed up as if it were just another Monday. No dramatic entrance. No public comments. No unexpected gestures.

When it comes to a transfer saga, people often search for signs, a facial expression, an awkward interaction, anything that hints at what comes next. On Monday morning at Real Madrid’s training complex in Valdebebas, there was none of that.

His return to preseason unfolded with complete normalcy, even as speculation over his future continues to grow louder. With contract extension talks still unresolved, the possibility of a departure this summer remains on the table if a new deal cannot be reached.

Monday had been circled for weeks. Instead of drama, it delivered routine. But beneath that calm lies what could become one of the most important weeks of Vinicius’ Real Madrid career.

The Brazilian and club officials are expected to hold face-to-face meetings in the coming days. No cryptic social media posts. No carefully leaked messages. Just direct conversations as both sides try to determine what comes next.

For now, though, it is calm before the storm.

Extra rest after a demanding season

Vinicius arrived at Valdebebas shortly before 8:30 a.m. local time (2:30 a.m. ET).

His preseason return came later than most of Real Madrid’s internationals after the club granted him four weeks of vacation, matching Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva for the longest break among the squad’s players.

The decision reflected the enormous workload Vinicius carried last season. He played more minutes than anyone else on the team, logging 4,249 of a possible 5,040 minutes, or 84% of Real Madrid’s total. He appeared in 53 of the club’s 56 matches, starting 48, before heading straight into the World Cup.

Club officials believed he needed every opportunity to fully recover before beginning another demanding campaign.

Medical exams before returning to the field

Monday marked the official start of his preseason, with 19 days remaining before Real Madrid opens its LaLiga season against Espanyol on Aug. 22.

His first stop was Hospital Blua Sanitas Valdebebas, located just over half a mile from the club’s training complex, where he underwent the standard preseason medical examination.

There he reunited with some of the day’s other arrivals, including Brahim Díaz and Bernardo Silva, who also reported Monday. After completing their medical evaluations and posing for the club’s photographers, the players headed to the training grounds.

First meeting with Mourinho since February controversy

The most anticipated moment came when Vinicius stepped onto the field and greeted head coach José Mourinho.

It was their first public meeting since Feb. 17, when racist abuse directed at Vinicius during a match in Lisbon sparked widespread outrage.

Following that game, Mourinho suggested Vinicius’ goal celebration had unnecessarily provoked the home crowd.

“Vinicius scores a goal that only he or Mbappé can score,” Mourinho said at the time. “After that, he should be celebrating with his teammates instead of engaging with 60,000 people in the stadium. That’s the only thing I’ll say.”

When reporters asked whether he believed Vinicius had provoked the abuse, Mourinho responded by repeatedly asking, “How many stadiums has this happened in?” before adding that, despite admiring the Brazilian’s talent, he believed the celebration should have ended with his teammates.

More than five months have passed since those remarks.

While many disagreements are resolved privately, there has been considerable interest in seeing how the two would interact publicly after a controversy that generated headlines across world soccer.

A cordial reunion

On Monday, there was no sign of lingering tension.

Vinicius and Mourinho shook hands and exchanged a few words before training began.

The session featured 14 first-team players. That number would have been 19 if not for injuries sidelining Éder Militão, Dean Huijsen, Raúl Asencio, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo.

Six more players have yet to report. Thibaut Courtois is expected back shortly, while World Cup semifinalists Ibrahima Konaté, Marc Cucurella, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé remain on extended vacation.

As more senior players return, the number of academy prospects involved in first-team sessions will naturally decrease. Another workout is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Vinicius impresses in first workout

Vinicius’ first training session was carefully managed.

His workload focused on strength training, gradual conditioning and light work with the ball as he eased back into full fitness.

Inside Valdebebas, club sources described his physical condition as “outstanding.” Mentally, they said he appeared “just like any other day,” projecting calm despite knowing the next chapter of his contract saga is about to begin.

Contract talks enter a crucial stage

Whether Vinicius signs a new contract remains the biggest unanswered question surrounding Real Madrid.

Two things are clear.

Both the player and the club continue to insist they want to reach an agreement. The desire is there.

The challenge is bridging the gap.

Negotiations remain far apart, and significant compromises may be required before a deal can be finalized.

Meanwhile, Arsenal continues to monitor the situation closely. Sources say manager Mikel Arteta has made it clear to Vinicius that the club’s interest is genuine and that he would become the centerpiece of Arsenal’s long-term project.

Vinicius is under contract through 2027. Officially, this season is now the final year of that agreement unless a new deal is signed.

Inside Real Madrid, there is growing acknowledgment that if negotiations collapse, a transfer this summer cannot be ruled out. It is not the club’s preferred outcome, but it is increasingly viewed as a realistic possibility.
