Giorgio Chiellini will return to Los Angeles Football Club after announcing his retirement last December and will do so as player development coach. In his new role, the former Italy international will work with head coach Steve Cherundolo and his coaching staff to assist in the development of first-team players.

The legendary Italian defender spent two seasons with the MLS team, helping them win the MLS Cup in 2022. Chiellini had a huge impact on the entire club and set new standards at the club during his time in Los Angeles.

“We were thankful to have Giorgio play the final 18 months of his playing career with LAFC,” LAFC Co-President & GM John Thorrington said. “During that time he proved what an asset he is for LAFC in a number of ways, and we are excited to add a truly brilliant football mind, incredible leader and an even better person to our staff for the upcoming season.”

The 39-year-old arrived at LAFC in the summer of 2022 and made 13 appearances, including 10 starts. In his first season, he was a key part of the defence for the 2022 MLS Cup-winning team.

Chiellini also helped the Black & Gold to seven straight MLS playoff wins between 2022 and 2023. The Italian won the Supporters’ Shield in 2022 and two Western Conference titles with LAFC.
