Who will the USMNT and England play in the Round of 16?

  • England: Qualified for the next round and will face Senegal
  • USA: Qualified for the next round and will face the Netherlands
  • Iran: Eliminated
  • Wales: Eliminated

The USA will face the Netherlands and England will face Senegal in the Round of 16 stage of the World Cup. The USMNT had a tough battle in a must-win match with Iran while England strolled easily into the top spot with a 3-0 victory over Wales.

The England vs Wales game was surprisingly scoreless at halftime, but England’s dominance eventually showed in the second half. It started with a Marcus Rashford free kick to get the opening goal in the 50th minute. Just seconds later, Rashford stole the ball back, which fell to Harry Kane, who passed it low for Foden to knock it in the net for goal number two. England’s third and final goal came from Rashford yet again, who spun it behind Kelvin Phillips and through Danny Ward’s legs to make it a cool 3-0 lead. There was no coming back from that for Wales as they fell to last place in Group B and now make their World Cup exit.

Since England placed first in Group B, they face the runners up from Group A, Senegal in the Round of 16. Senegal beat Ecuador to finish second in their group.

The USMNT had a tougher time getting the win against Iran, but they pulled it off. After a 1-1 tie with Wales and a 0-0 tie with England, they were third in the table and needed the win to advance. Christian Pulisic put his body on the line to get their goal, who hit it in from six yards after a header from Sergiño Dest. A collision with Iran’s goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand during the goal had Pulisic down on the field and out for the second half. It’s still not clear whether he will be able to return for the next match.

That goal and tough defensive work from the midfield was just what the US needed to secure the win over Iran and their place in the Round of 16.

Since the US finished second in Group B, they will play the winners of Group A, the Netherlands. The Netherlands beat Qatar earlier in the day to qualify and top the group.
